Hudson’s Bay Stock Jumps 17% on Renewed Deal Hopes

Hudson’s Bay Co. received a New Year’s Eve jolt, jumping 17.4 percent on a WWD report that executive chairman Richard Baker and a group of shareholders were close to sealing a deal to take the parent of Saks Fifth Avenue private.  The stock, which trades in Canadian dollars on the Toronto Stock Exchange, was up $1.42 to $9.59 in mid-morning trading.  WWD reported late Monday that Baker and his associates, who collectively own a majority of the retailer’s shares, were nearing a deal with Catalyst Capital Group that would pave the way for a buyout at a higher price than previously offered.  The group holds 57 percent of Hudson’s Bay’s stock and initially proposed using proceeds from the 1 billion euro sale of the company’s European operations to buy out the minority holders at $9.45 a share. That price was later upped to $10.30 a share, or $1.9 billion — a price that was ultimately accepted by a special committee of the Canadian retailer’s board.  The deal had to be approved by a majority of the minority holders and Catalyst pushed for a higher price from the majority holders and even tabled its own offer of $11 a share.  That competing offer wasn’t seen as

The #MeToo wave which started in the West, took over India in 2018. Several women took to social media to reveal about people who harassed them in the past. The movement also brought into light the names of several Bollywood celebrities. The movement started with Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta accusing Nana Patekar of sexual misconduct on the sets of the 2008 film Horn Ok Pleassss. Gradually, several other women started naming the likes of Vikas Bahl, Sajid Khan, Rajat Kapoor, Alok Nath, and Anu Malik for using their position to exploit women.

Recently, in an interview Sunny Leone was asked about the change that came with the #MeToo movement. She said that she does not work in an office and lives in a bubble but does believe that more women talk about these issues of sexual harassment or (instances of people) making them feel uncomfortable at work, whether it is women or men. She said that even men are harassed and that it is not recognized because people think it is not a big deal.

She said that the more people speak up, the more they make it aware that it is not okay. The actress feels that thing swill change, especially with people getting exposed through social media and other media outlets.

Sunny was glad that a message around the importance of consent was included in web series Ragini MMS Returns Season 2. She has a cameo as a paranormal expert in the ALTBalaji series.

However, Neha further said that those things do not happen anymore but when it happened with her, she laughed it off. She said that she was not bothered by the incident.

British Retailer Sir David Jones Dies Aged 76

LONDON – Retailer Sir David Jones, who secretly battled Parkinson’s disease as he built a successful career on the British high street, has died aged 79, according to his former employer, the fashion chain Next. Jones, a savvy accountant with zero fashion flair, rescued Next from collapse during the Eighties after staging a boardroom coup that saw the exit of clothing and design powerhouse George Davies as chairman and chief executive. Davies, with his flair for mass-market fashion, had built Next into a high-street giant during the Eighties, but when costs spiralled out of control and Next’s value on the FTSE 100 plummeted, he quickly fell from grace. Davies would later create successful clothing lines at Asda and later Marks & Spencer. Unknown to anyone associated with the film the producers Viacom 18 have decided to release Ramesh Sippy’s Shimla Mirchi, Sippy’s first directorial venture in 24 years, on Netflix. Neither the director nor the principal members of the cast Hema Malini and Rajkummar Rao were taken into confidence on the release platform.

 A source close to Ramesh Sippy says the veteran director of Sholay is mighty miffed, “Viacom 18 has taken the decision (to release Shimla Mirchi on the digital platform) on their own. Rameshji had no say in the matter. He made the film in 2014 at a meagre budget of 16-17 crores. It was meant to be a small sweet romantic film set in Shimla. Rameshji handed over the film to the producers in 2015. Just why they sat on it for 4 years and why they’ve decided to not give it a theatrical release is not explained. It isn’t as if small-town romances don’t work in theatres. Viacom themselves have released several such films. Recent films like Luka Chuppi and Pati Patni Aur Woh have done well. Then why this stepmotherly treatment to  Shimla Mirchi?”

A true gentleman, Ramesh Sippy has decided to stay quiet on the matter. All he will say is, “I am very proud of Shimla Mirchi, and I’m glad it’s finally being released. The platform and format of release is the producers’ decision.”

BREAKING: CBFC passes Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak with ‘U’ certificate and ZERO cuts

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), since 4-5 years, has become too conservative or regressive at times. A lot of unfair cuts have been enforced on certain films, which has led to numerous controversies over the years. But one can’t deny that there have been also instances when the CBFC has understood the intent behind a film and have not gone for any kind of censoring in such films, despite the presence of disturbing scenes or dialogues.

BREAKING: CBFC passes Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak with ‘U’ certificate and ZERO cuts

Chhapaak, one of the first films of 2020, is one such film that has escaped the wrath of CBFC. Starring Deepika Padukone, it tells the story of an acid attack survivor. The powerful trailer is laced with some scenes that can be difficult to sit through for audiences. However, thankfully, the CBFC understood the motive behind those scenes in this Meghna Gulzar-directed film. And surprisingly, they have passed the film without any cut. Moreover, it has also been awarded a ‘U’ certificate!

A source close to the project says, “Though Chhapaak releases on January 10, it was ready since a while and hence, the producers thought not to waste time and get the censor certificate soon. It would have also given them time to discuss with the CBFC, if they had raised objection to any part of the film. But to the pleasant surprise to the entire team, the CBFC members made it clear that there is no need for any kind of audio or visual cut in the film at all. Also, they felt that a film like this should be seen by all age groups. As a result, they immediately decided to give the film a ‘U’ rating.”

Chhapaak got the censor certificate on December 6, four days before its trailer was out. The total length of the film is 123 minutes.

HBC Majority Shareholders, Catalyst Near Deal Over Higher Offer

The continuing shareholders of Hudson’s Bay Co. Inc. and Catalyst Capital Group are close to reaching an agreement that would see Catalyst support a higher bid from the continuing shareholders to take the retailer private, WWD has learned. Sources said Catalyst is working with the continuing shareholders, led by HBC executive chairman Richard Baker, who holds a majority of the retailer, to enter into an agreement to support an offer that would be an amount greater than the 10.30 Canadian dollars a share that Baker’s group originally offered. The amount of the new bid could not immediately be learned. A deal is expected to be concluded within the next 24 to 48 hours, sources said. Neither Baker nor representatives of Catalyst could be reached for comment at press time. However, it is understood the continuing shareholders, who represent 57 percent of HBC’s shares, the special committee of HBC directors chosen to assess the offers and Catalyst, which holds a significant minority of HBC, have been in discussions for the last week about a possible deal. “This would be a big win for Catalyst, especially considering the weak retail environment in Canada at this time,” one source said. Kwatha: Aayush Sharma and Isabelle Kaif to head to North-east for next schedule

Aayush Sharma has commenced his second project opposite debutante Isabelle Kaif, Katrina Kaif's sister. The film, Kwatha, went on the floor just a few days ago. After a short span in Mumbai, the cast will head to Delhi for 10 days of the shoot.

He said there's only heart involved when it comes to work. And he says that by god's grace, everything has been working out well. He further said that he always worked from the heart and even gave 16 flops at that time. But, that did not stop him. He kept following his heart.

Akshay Kumar films not only benefit him but also producers, exhibitors, theatres and distributors. But, does the actor feel pressurized to work in such a scenario? He said that almost 180 films are made in Hindi in a year. If one Akshay Kumar feels goes, other will come. He said that he does four films a year so there are 176 more films to watch. Akshay said that he does not feel pressurized. He just feels the film should do well so that his next year goes well too.

On the work front, Akshay Kumar is currently seen in Good Newwz. He has three releases next year - Sooryavanshi, Laxmmi Bomb, Bachchan Pandey.

While they took to their social media to apologise for unintentionally hurting the sentiments, there were several peaceful protests held across Punjab against Farah Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Bharti Singh.

Take to her social media, Farah Khan posted, “I’m extremely saddened that some sentiments have been inadvertently hurt by a recent episode of my show. While Raveena tweeted, “Please do watch this link. I haven't said a word that can be interpreted as an insult to any religion. The three of us (Farah Khan, Bharti Singh and I) never intended to offend anyone, but in case we did, my most sincere apologies to those who were hurt.”

Barneys New York’s lawyer told the judge back in August that the goal was “making sure this company lands in the hands of someone that can operate it as a going concern.”  But, as the nearly century-old luxury retailer discovered in November, the court lately has been a grim destination for retailers — a place to wind up before liquidation, and at best be revived as a marketable idea sold to the only bidder. For Barneys, where executives, advisers and even top creditors spent months working to secure a buyer who would preserve its stores, that meant a sale to Authentic Brands Group, a licensing company that plans to rent out the name to Saks Fifth Avenue. In just the last two years, roughly three dozen major retailers — including Sears Holdings Co., Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Payless ShoeSource and Gymboree Group Inc. — have filed for bankruptcy protection, some for the second time, according to data tracked by research firm Coresight Research. The insolvencies have led to liquidation sales and record store closures. More than 9,000 store closures were announced in 2019, according to a Nov.

Earlier in May, Disha Patani had teased fans with a cool picture from the sets of Malang in which she and co-star Aditya Roy Kapur posed in diving suits. Now, they both will be seen underwater performing a kissing sequence. The duo was prepping for an extended underwater kissing sequence in the film. Director Mohit Suri had sent the actors packing for two days of prep in May ahead of the shoot.

The sequence required Disha and Aditya to be underwater for at least a minute, so the training focused on strengthening lung capacity moreover the sequence was shot during the Goa schedule of the film in a day. It was a difficult shoot as Aditya and Disha had to sync their breathing patterns accordingly.

Malang is a revenge drama, helmed by Aashiqui 2 director Mohit and produced by Bhushan, Luv Ranjan, Ankur and Jay Shewakramani. The film also stars Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemmu in pivotal roles. The flick is set to hit theatres on February 7, 2020.

Talking about the same, Abhimanyu shares, "There is a lot of action in Nikamma.  Sabbir sir, and I both were keen that I do all the action & stunts myself. We traveled to Turkey especially to learn this fighting form and it was an amazing experience. I trained with the armed forces there which were extremely engaging because it wasn't just fancy film fighting, but moreover real-life protection and takedowns."

Nikamma is jointly produced by Sony Pictures International Productions and Sabbir Khan Films and is scheduled to release on 5th June 2020.

EssilorLuxottica Reports Financial Fraud at Thailand Plant

PARIS – European eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica said on Monday it had uncovered fraudulent financial activities in one of its plants in Thailand that will have an estimated impact of up to 190 million euros on its full-year operating result. The group, born from the merger between France’s Essilor and Italy’s Luxottica that was finalized in October 2018 to create the world leader in its domain, said its subsidiary Essilor International has filed complaints in Thailand and other jurisdictions and mobilized all available resources to put an end to the fraud. “It is also carrying out comprehensive investigations and is taking all possible actions to seek to recover the misappropriated funds in order to mitigate the impact on the group. The employees known to date to be associated with these fraudulent activities have been terminated,” EssilorLuxottica said in a statement. The group has strengthened its security processes worldwide as a result of the incident. The financial impact has been calculated before insurance, pending legal actions and anticipated recovery of further funds currently frozen on various bank accounts, and will be treated as an adjusted item, it said.

In a sudden turn of events, producers Viacom 18 have decided to release the long-delayed Hema Malini - Rajkummar Rao – Rakul Preet Singh starrer Shimla Mirchi. The film about a romantic relationship between a young man and an older woman played by Rao and Hema, was shot in 2014. The film will be produced by Imtiaz Ali and Reliance Entertainment and directed by Imtiaz’s brother Sajid Ali who made his directorial debut last year with Avinash Tiwary’s Laila Majnu.”

For unversed, Amar Singh Chamkila was a songwriter, musician, and composer. Hailing from Punjab, he became popular with the stage name Chamkila and was regarded as one of the best performers Punjab has ever produced. His music was very much influenced from his surroundings. The songs were a commentary on Punjab and it's culture. His best-known hits include ‘Takue Te Takua’, ‘Pehle Lalkare Naal’ among others.

But, in the most tragic turn of events, Chamkila and his wife Amarjot were brutally assassinated and gunned along with the two members of his band on 8 March 1988. As it was reported, a group of armed youths on motorcycles fired several rounds fatally injuring all of them. No arrests were made at the time and the case has been unsolved till date.

Ryan Reynolds confirms Deadpool 3 is in works

Happy Holidays indeed for Ryan Reynolds fans as the actor has confirmed that Deadpool 3 is in works. The actor, who was recently seen in Netflix's actioner 6 Underground, recently appeared on Live With Kelly and Ryan where he told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest that the team is currently working on the third installment.

TX Huaihai: A New Brick and Mortar Retail Experience for China’s Digital Youth

SHANGHAI–At a time when China’s lucrative youth consumer market is more digitally connected than ever, TX founder Dickson Szeto is betting hard on physical retail. Over a decade ago, Deepika Padukone made her debut in Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Since then, she has worked with him in Chennai Express and Happy New Year. The actress has been aware of Shah Rukh Khan's philanthropic side as he supports acid attack survivors through his Meer Foundation. Deepika Padukone, who is playing acid attack survivour in Chhapaak, recently opened up about SRK's work.

Talking about the same, Deepika said that she remembered during the shooting of Happy New Year or Chennai Express, Shah Rukh Khan had expressed that he'd like to support acid attack survivours. She said he had already started helping on an individual level but never spoke about it. She mentioned the actor has been financially supporting the survivors at an individual level but wanted to do it at a much larger level. She said she hasn't met him in a while but started to hear about Meer Foundation around the time when she began filming Chhapaak. She said something he would talk about had actually taken shape. He believed in it and followed through and they are doing incredible work.

Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is set to release on January 10, 2020.

Farah Khan, on Friday, took to Twitter to apologize on behalf of the entire team of her show and wrote, "I’m extremely saddened that some sentiments have been inadvertently hurt by a recent episode of my show. I respect all religions, n it would never be my intention 2disrespect any. On behalf of the entire team, Raveena Tandon, Bharti Singh and Myself.. we do sincerely apologise."

On Thursday, even Raveena Tandon apologized on Twitter and wrote, “I haven’t said a word that can be interpreted as an insult to any religion. The three of us (Farah Khan, Bharti Singh and I) never intended to offend anyone, but in case we did, my most sincere apologies to those who were hurt."

A case was registered on Wednesday after the complaint was filed by Sonu Jafar, President of Christian Front of Ajnala Block. The video was also provided which aired during Christmas eve. The FIR was registered in Amritsar at Ajnala police station under section 295-A of the IPC.

As Online Holiday Sales Soar, So Does the Burden of Returns

As economists are expecting online holiday sales to show an 18 to 19 percent year-over-year growth rate, retailers and brands are faced with a record number of product returns. Companies are also dealing with steeper shipping costs, which is now becoming a top expense. One carrier alone is expecting nearly 2 million returns on Jan. 2, which is now known as “National Returns Day.” [See related story: Holiday Shipping, What to Expect This Shopping Season] UPS, which offers a variety of solutions to help businesses better manage returns, is predicting a “seventh consecutive record-breaking National Returns Day as consumers send back holiday orders ranging from ill-fitting sweaters to duplicate kitchen gadgets,” the company said in a statement adding that on Jan. 2 shoppers are expected “to deposit 1.9 million returns packages into the UPS network — a 26 percent spike from last year’s peak returns day.” UPS said its solutions make it easier for consumers to return holiday gifts. Kareena Kapoor Khan had revealed during the promotional events of the film that she was the first one to be cast for the film. She said that she signed the film because she really enjoyed the script. Good Newwz is about two couples who try to get pregnant through IVF. However, there is a sperm mix up when the IVF center confuses them because of their same surnames.

Good Newwz directed by Raj Mehta and co-produced by Karan Johar hit the theatres today across the world.

On Thursday, the makers of Chhapaak released a promotional video song titled ‘Ab Ladna Hai’. Legendary lyricist-writer Gulzar penned the lyrics for the same. In the video, Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey are seen giving voice to Gulzar's inspirational words as she calls on society to bring about a change in its mindset.

Director Meghna Gulzar who is bringing the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal while talking to a publication said that Chhapaak is as much a story of human courage as it is about changing attitude towards survivors. Meghna said that ‘Ab Ladna Hai’ is a poem written by her father, especially for the campaign. The filmmaker further said that the film highlights that a lot needs to change with regard to acid attack survivors and their place in our society.

The director further said that the subject of the film does not allow much room for songs and she is happy to collaborate with her father again. She said that there are three songs in the album, but the team thought it was better to communicate the core emotion with a poem written by Gulzar.

Padukone who voiced the words of Gulzar said that she was instantly drawn to the lines. She said that the lines were so powerful that she had to be a part of this creative piece.

He, therefore, wrote a letter to Pinaraya Vijayan, the CM of Kerala, thanking him, for the land and requested him to build a hospital where people from all religions are treated equally.

Khan further said that he has asked them to involve the Tata Group, Ambani or Reliance Group or Lulu group so they make a world-class hospital. He further said that he thinks this is the best way he can serve the people of Kerala who have always showered him with love and respect.

Selfridges Bucks Disappointing Boxing Day Sales Trends in Britain

LONDON – Wet, windy weather – and a torrent of pre-Christmas discounting – dented Boxing Day sales across the U.K., with premium and luxury, multi-brand stores such as Selfridges faring far better than their high street counterparts and the big retail chains. In terms of footfall, it was the worst Boxing Day in almost a decade, according to Springboard, which measures retail activity at bricks-and-mortar stores across the country, Springboard said footfall fell 8.6 percent on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, compared with Dec. 26 a year ago. The organization said that footfall improved during the day, with stores attracting more customers after 5:00 p.m. Diane Wehrle, insights director at Springboard, said that people are not only shopping later on Boxing Day, they are also traveling to bricks-and-mortar destinations to do things other than shop.
