How Usha Vance’s Black Flutter Sleeve Dress and Mantilla Blend Symbolism and Modernity at Pope Leo’s Inaugural Mass

Second Lady Usha Vance joined her husband, Vice President J.D. Vance, at the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Francis Provost, on Sunday in Vatican City. J.D. is Catholic and the second lady is a practicing Hindu. Usha embraced Catholic tradition at the mass in all-black, which is expected of most women at the pontiff’s first service. She wore Alexia Admor’s black “Riley” sheath dress that included a jewel neckline with flutter sleeves that cut above the elbow, bringing a subtle dose of volume to the silhouette. She paired it with low pointed-toe pumps. She capped the look off with a matching mantilla, which is intended to symbolize women veiling one’s own physical beauty in favor of the beauty of God. It is often made of lace. United States Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady of the United States Usha Vance arrive ahead of the Inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV in St Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025 in Vatican City, Vatican. If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. If you deal with acne, odds are that you think twice before applying anything new on your skin — forbid the wrong serum, moisturizer, or makeup primer causes a flare up. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable in all skin care routines, and the very best sunscreens for acne-prone skin types will keep your skin calm and covered this season. Regardless of your skin type, tone, or texture, sunscreen is vital for preventing skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, daily use of a facial sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 may reduce your risk of developing melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, by a whopping 50 percent, according to a 2011 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Though most dermatologists agree that SPF 30 is the sweet spot for everyday coverage — particularly in the summer, when the sun’s rays are stronger. On top of daily sunscreen use, those with acne-prone skin should avoid prolonged sun exposure and — it goes without saying, we hope! — tanning bed use. Beyond skin cancer and premature

Starbucks Workers Go on Strike to Protest New Dress Code

More than 1,000 Starbucks baristas from 75 locations in the U.S. have initiated a strike on Sunday in response to a new dress code implemented by the company, a union representing the coffee giant’s employees reported on Wednesday. As of Monday, the company has simplified its dress code to highlight its signature green apron. According to the coffee chain’s updated policy, baristas can wear any black shirt, whether short- or long-sleeved, collared or button-up, paired with khaki, black or blue denim pants. Starbucks previously said it would provide two branded T-shirts for staff members at no cost. The new dress code affects employees at company-operated and licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada. In April, Starbucks Workers United sent a letter to the Seattle-based coffee maker as “a formal request that no change to the current dress code be implemented at Union-represented stores until the parties conclude bargaining.”  On Wednesday, Starbucks said that the strike was affecting its 10,000 company-operated stores in the U.S. to a limited extent. Phil Gee, a Starbucks spokesperson said, “Thousands of Starbucks partners (employees) came to work today ready to serve their customers and communities. The biggest update to our dress code is simple: wear a black shirt

Every year, some of the most prominent runway stars flock to the event, sharing the red carpet with actors, directors and producers who are promoting their latest work in cinema. Cannes features an extensive list of luxury sponsors, which this year includes companies like Air France, Angénieux, BMW, Brut, Chopard, Dessange, J.P. Morgan, L’Oréal Paris, Mastercard, Nespresso, TikTok and Kering, among others. To maximize their visibility and prestige during the event, those brands often invite models and influencers as brand ambassadors. How Kim Kardashian’s Outfit Became Her Shield in Court: Unpacking the Symbolism of Her Paris Trial Look

An outfit is worth a thousand words and a few million dollars for Kim Kardashian. The cofounder of Skims gave an emotional testimony to a Paris court on Tuesday, speaking for more than three hours in the courtroom. Meanwhile, her look — a vintage, tailored skirt suit designed by John Galliano and a million dollars worth in diamonds — was seen as a straightforward message to the 10 people accused of robbing the reality star in October 2016. “Often celebrity dressing in the courtroom involves trying to dispel any appearance of wrongdoing, whether the high-profile individual is charged with a crime or embroiled in a divorce or other dispute, with ensembles chosen to emphasize the wearer’s status as an innocent, upright citizen. In this case, Kim Kardashian is appearing in the role of victim and survivor,” professor Susan Scafidi, founder and director of the Fashion Law Institute, told WWD. Kardashian’s black suit featured a dramatic silhouette, which can be interpreted “simultaneously as a nod to traditional courtroom attire, a reminder of feminine vulnerability in its wasp waist and skirt rather than trousers, and a reclamation of power through its broad shoulders,” according to Scafidi. If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. When blackheads seemingly surface overnight, there’s a golden rule to live by: Don’t squeeze your skin. As tempting as it may be, that poking, prodding, and picking can do more harm than good, triggering irritation and harming the skin. Instead, do your skin one better with one of the best blackhead removal tools that safely clear the skin. Blackhead extractors come in all shapes and sizes — there are high-tech devices and pore strips that manually pull out the pore-clogging debris, as well as chemical exfoliants that clear out blackheads with a mix of skin-friendly acids.  Before we get into the details of the best blackhead removal tools, it’s important to understand what blackheads exactly are. “Blackheads are open comedones (AKA pore blockages) that are open to the air,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Angelo Landriscina. “Since they are open to the air, the contents on the surface can become oxidized, leading to their dark color. Closed comedones on the other hand do not undergo oxidation — these are commonly referred to as whiteheads.”  While those with oily and acne-prone skin are the
