Diptyque’s Summer Citronnelle Candle Is a Mediterranean Vacation for Your Senses

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Diptyque is ready to send your senses on the Euro trip you deserve: Today, the luxury candle label released its summer 2024 collection that features the fan-favorite Citronnelle candle that plunks you on the Mediterranean coast (and just so happens to keep pesky mosquitoes away from your alfresco setup).  Diptyque’s Citronnelle candle made a splash in the brand’s summer collection last year, amassing over 10 million views on TikTok from olfactory experts and novices who shared rave reviews: Many cite nostalgic appeal for its classic citronella-inspired scent profile, while others call it a one-way ticket to La Dolce Vita lifestyle. Candles don’t have active ingredients like skin care products, however it’s worth noting that the Citronnelle fragrance features a wallop of lemongrass — an ingredient that smells tangy and sweet to our noses, but sends mosquitoes skedaddling. While great in theory, many hardware store citronella candles feature artificial lemongrass notes that read overly sweet or slightly chemical. Diptyque’s, on the other hand, is balanced with notes of neroli, geranium, and orange blossom for balanced wafts you’ll want to sniff. For its summer

How Jennifer Lopez’s Futuristic ‘Atlas’ Warrior Costume Was a ‘Marriage of Form and Function’ With Inspiration From Virgil Abloh and Maybach for Netflix Movie

In the past couple of months, Jennifer Lopez has worn gowns from Schiaparelli, Monique Lhuillier, Chloé and Zuhair Murad on red carpets. Starting on Friday, her fans will get to see her in outfits far less glamorous in the new Netflix film “Atlas.” Brad Peyton directed and produced the film, which tells the sci-fi story of Atlas Shepherd, played by Lopez. Her character is a misanthropic data analyst who has a complicated relationship with artificial intelligence and needs to save humanity’s future. To help Lopez channel the anti-AI warrior, costume designer Daniel Orlandi imagined how the fashion industry would look like in the future. “We talked about a lot of things. A hundred years in the future will Ralph Lauren still be in business? Will the Gap still be in business? I think it will,” Orlandi said via statement. Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd on the set of Netflix’s “Atlas.” Orlandi created the costumes worn by Lopez in the movie prioritizing fabrics with synthetic fibers. “We thought about how fabric might change in the future. So everything we use seems vegan, there’s no leather. We questioned if wool would even be available in the future,” he explained. Lopez starts her

What Happened to Marie Antoinette’s Jewels? Diamonds, Pearls and the Necklace That Launched a Revolution

Marie Antoinette was known — and eventually beheaded — for her lavish spending. The last Queen of France and her husband, King Louis XVI met their untimely ends after squandering their vast fortune as their subjects starved. The Queen’s annual clothing budget surpassed $3 million, according to journalist Laurence Benaim, author of “Fashion and Versailles.” Marie Antoinette’s expenditures naturally extended to accessories, including jewelry. Ahead, see where the ill-fated royal’s precious gems ended up after the French Revolution. The Affair of the Diamond Necklace A reproduction of “the Queen’s necklace.” In 1772, King Louis XV commissioned a diamond necklace from Parisian jewelers Charles Auguste Boehmer and Paul Bassenge. Estimated to cost 2 million livres, the necklace was intended to be a gift to his mistress, Madame du Barry. The King died of smallpox before the piece could be completed. The jewelers attempted to sell the necklace to Marie Antoinette, but she turned down the offer. Boehmer and Bassenge, in need of a buyer, got in contact with a noblewoman and con artist, Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, also known as Countess de la Motte. Posing as the Queen, she wrote several letters to a bishop and former ambassador, Cardinal de Rohan, convincing him to pay for the necklace

Why Marilyn Monroe Remains a Cultural Icon: How Estate Owners Transformed Her Legacy Into $80M Global Sales

Marilyn Monroe may have been gone for more than 60 years, but to Authentic Brands Group, she’s alive and well. The actress and model — who redefined glamor and sex appeal in her heyday — died of a drug overdose in August of 1962 at the age of 36, but her legacy lives on. Since 2011, the year Authentic purchased an 80 percent stake in her intellectual property, sales of product with her name on it have grown fourfold to $80 million in global sales. And with the 100th anniversary of her birth fast approaching — she was born June 1, 1926 — those numbers are expected to grow substantially as the Authentic promotional juggernaut shifts into high gear. Although Authentic also owns the rights to the estates of a number of celebrities including Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe was the first. “Marilyn was the first celebrity brand that we’ve owned 100 percent of, and it really kind of set the tone for how we were going to be in this business,” said Dana Carpenter, executive vice president of entertainment for Authentic. In 2011, Authentic teamed with NECA, a global media and entertainment company, to acquire the majority stake in Marilyn

Pride Month Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary: The 2024 Fashion Collections From Companies That Give Back to Support LGBTQIA+ Community

Pride Month originated in 1999, when President Bill Clinton declared through federal proclamation that every June in America will be recognized as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.” “I encourage all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that celebrate our diversity, and to remember throughout the year the gay and lesbian Americans whose many and varied contributions have enriched our national life,” Clinton said. Pride Month was later expanded by President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden with the additions of other queer identities. Throughout Pride Month’s iterations, brands have amplified messaging in products and campaigns as a way to celebrate the community’s ongoing advancements toward equality, protections and inclusion. In recent years, brands have also increased their representation of segments within the queer umbrella, including people of color, gender identities and more. Here, WWD highlights some of the brands and retailers that are donating to causes that support LGBTQIA+ people and are releasing products with purpose — Pride-themed apparel, beauty, accessories and more with empowering messages. How Beyoncé’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Cover Changed the Magazine’s Annual Special Edition in a New Direction

Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue cover has featured a bevy of celebrities, models and athletes since its first edition in 1964. But it wasn’t until 2007 when Beyoncé modeled for the cover of the edition that the magazine branched out beyond models and athletes to tapping celebrity entertainers as their cover stars. Since then, several non-models and non-athletes have graced the cover, in no small part due to Beyoncé’s cover star status. In the spring of 2006, the editorial team at Sports Illustrated chose music as the theme for the 2007 special edition issue. That same year, Beyoncé was broadening her business acumen, introducing a swimwear line under the House of Deréon fashion line, which she co-introduced with her mother Tina Knowles. The combination of Sports Illustrated’s theme for their swimsuit issue coupled with Beyoncé’s business decision made for an advantageous collaboration between the singer and magazine. Within the decade preceding 2007, however, the magazine began to make certain changes and meet ongoing cultural conversations concerning inclusivity. If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Few sunscreens evoke the same sense of nostalgia and French Riviera-style summertime bliss as Bain de Soleil’s Orange Gelée. So when the sunscreen was discontinued in 2019, one of today’s most playful SPF brands, Vacation, embarked on a project to bring it back to life in a modern formula that honors the one that inspired it. Upon the April launch of Vacation’s take on Orange Gelée, our editors had to put it to the test. After debuting in France in the mid-1920s, this iconic tanning gel quickly became a staple in Côte d’Azur beach clubs and eventually made its way onto the arms of stateside sun-worshipers in the 1940s. With its unmistakable, floral-citrus scent and unique balm-to-oil formula, it became synonymous with carefree days spent under the sun with a piña colada in hand. Orange Gelée enjoyed decades of fame throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, bolstered by its association with sun-kissed icons like Pamela Anderson and Tom Ford. When Orange Gelée disappeared from shelves in 2019, it left a void in the hearts of many sun-soaked souls — over
