How ‘The White Lotus’ Became a Gold Mine for Fashion Brands

The latest viral moment of “The White Lotus” sees Parker Posey’s wealthy matriarch character Victoria Ratliff sending a blunt message to her husband: “I just don’t think at this age I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life.” The scene, which aired on March 23 in episode six of the third season, featured Posey in a Jim Thompson Slipper Orchid silk kimono dress. Since then, the online demand for the kimono has exploded. “Our U.S. e-commerce site outperformed our global site for the first time, driven entirely by demand for the kaftan, for which sales have increased 671 percent in the past four days,” the brand’s chief executive officer Frank Cancelloni told WWD. Founded in 1950 by American veteran James H. W. Thompson in Thailand, where the show’s third season is set, the silk manufacturer worked closely with “The White Lotus” costume designer Alex Bovaird to create fashion and home furnishing pieces that “authentically represented Thailand,” Cancelloni said. The partnership has paid off, with the brand’s U.S. order volume seeing a 228 percent increase and overall revenue jumping 138 percent year-over-year in March, according to Cancelloni. Jim Thompson is only one of the many brands touched by “The White Lotus” magic this season. Lucy

For opening night, Osborne wore a Mara Hoffman dress paired with kitten heels from Zara, as well as a pair of glasses gifted from a friend.  “I loved having a little piece of home with me to get ready,” she said. Alexander Hodge Embraces the Art of Play in Peacock’s ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’

The beauty of being part of a weekly television series is, as Alexander Hodge tells it, the morning-after-airing group chat. “We all text each other on Monday after the episodes come out and we send each other nice messages,” Hodge says of his fellow “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” cast members. “It’s interesting when you read the scripts — and we read them months ago — and then we filmed them maybe six weeks ago, and then once the edit comes back, it goes to air, and it’s nice to see the progression and see what work everybody else did.”  “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” on Peacock, is a murder-mystery drama set in a wealthy Michigan suburb’s gardening society. Hodge stars — alongside AnnaSophia Robb, Aja Naomi King, Ben Rappaport and Melissa Fumero — as Doug, husband to Robb’s Alice.  Hodge burst onto the scene in the Issa Rae-helmed series “Insecure” in 2018, in which he played a love interest of Yvonne Orji’s Molly, who became known as “Asian bae.” In the years that followed, Hodge was continually offered similar love interest roles, which is something he contended with for a number of years. “I would tell my team, ‘I’m ready to not play the love

Jennifer Lopez and her child Emme Muñiz were among the celebrity guests in New York who attended Sunday’s opening night of “Othello” on Broadway in glamorous outfits. Styled by duo Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi, Lopez wore a long-sleeved crop top with a high collar and a matching long skirt with a flowing train that extended onto the red carpet. Both pieces were embellished with intricate beading in a whimsical pattern. She completed the look with a dramatic fur coat and Briony Raymond jewelry. Lopez’s dress was from Zuhair Murad’s fall 2024 couture collection, described as “clothing the sexy, edgy drama queen” by Alex Wynne for WWD. “Zuhair Murad sought to offer an outlet for his heroine’s inner torment this season, translating emotion like a burst of anger in his glittering silhouettes. Jagged shard-like adornments were scattered across his designs like a cry for help, while embroideries burst forth like explosions, their chaos delivering drama to the silhouette,” Wynne wrote. Parker Posey, Noah Cyrus and More Welcome Printemps to New York

Two hours into the Printemps grand opening party in New York, CEO Jean-Marc Bellaiche was leading a quick, and very timely, French lesson for the crowd.  ” Tonight is the eve of Spring Equinox — and as you know, ‘spring’ is ‘printemps’ in French. You need all to know how to pronounce ‘prown-thom,'” Bellaiche told the crowd, enunciating the French word for “spring.” “We’ll do a test later.” Earlier in the evening, Bellaiche could be found walking VIP guests including Katie Holmes and Parker Posey across the store floor and down to the landmarked mosaic “red room,” which serves as the store’s shoe department. “She’s the best,” gushed a fan, watching Posey pick up one of the shoes on display as she posed for photos. The “White Lotus” star was on selfie duty all night, gamely welcoming the nonstop photo requests and praise everywhere she went. “These are so pretty,” the actress remarked, pausing to admire one of the many fragrant floral arrangements within the store’s beauty corridor. On the eve of the spring equinox, Printemps kept the Moët & Chandon flowing throughout the crowded store. Guests included designers Gilles Mendel, Michelle Ochs, Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell, along with hotelier Alan Faena, Isabella

From DMs to Dinner Parties: Helena Christensen and Jeanne Damas Celebrate Rouje’s ‘Dreamy’ Summer Campaign

A few years ago, Rouje founder Jeanne Damas noticed that Helena Christensen was wearing — and tagging — her Parisian fashion brand on Instagram. Damas DMed the model to thank her, kicking off an online friendship. That initial digital encounter led to a campaign and a party. On Wednesday night, Damas and Christensen hosted a casual passed dinner at a friend’s Tribeca loft to celebrate Rouje’s summer 2025 campaign, starring Christensen. “ Rouje, it was always a story of women, of encounters,” said Damas. A jazz trio and candles flickering throughout the room set the relaxed vibe as the two women held court on one of the couches, making space for friends like Julianne Moore, an early arrival, Nicole Ari Park, Leigh Lezark, Ivy Getty and Famke Janssen throughout the evening. “It’s been almost 10 years that I’ve had the brand, but I never shoot with a personality, it’s always girls next door — my friends or my sister, or me,” said Damas, who founded Rouje in 2016. “ So it’s a dream come true that the first time was with Helena,” she added. “She’s such a Rouje girl. She’s her own universe. She is this supermodel, but she is also a photographer. She’s a mother.

Michelle Monaghan on ‘The White Lotus’ Cliffhangers and Her Thailand Beauty Routine

It’s a good week to be Michelle Monaghan. Episode five of “The White Lotus” has had everyone abuzz since airing Sunday night, with Monaghan’s character Jaclyn caught in one of the episode’s major cliffhangers. In the midst of talking about the show, Monaghan was also celebrating her first beauty campaign, for U Beauty. After the news was announced earlier in the day, the actress was on hand at The Mark Hotel Tuesday evening for a celebratory dinner hosted by U Beauty’s Tina Craig and Katie Borghese. “I’m so excited about this campaign,” said Monaghan, sporting a pale pink Khaite slipdress. “I’ve been a longtime fan of their products and it just felt like we were all aligned in terms of what our beauty standards are and what our goals are.” Framing the dining room were several blown-up images from the campaign, which Monaghan said was a little “surreal” to walk into.  “I can say that I’ve never really enjoyed looking at myself so much,” she said. “They really did such a beautiful job.” Inside the U Beauty x Michelle Monaghan dinner. While on set in Thailand shooting “The White Lotus,” Monaghan especially relied upon U Beauty’s resurfacing compound, which she called her “holy grail” product. “It

A Bold New Chapter: Macy’s Challenges the Status Quo

To listen to the podcast on Retail Rx, click here. Last year, Macy’s unveiled its Bold New Chapter initiative with the goal of challenging the status quo. Balancing the art and science of retail, the strategy was informed by comprehensive customer research, and had three distinct tiers: strengthen the Macy’s nameplate, accelerate luxury growth and simplify and modernize end-to-end operations. In this podcast, Lauren Parker, director of Fairchild Studio, chats with Nata Dvir, chief merchandising officer at Macy’s, about her 19-year career trajectory from executive trainee to C-suite, and how she is leading the retailer’s merchandising strategy. Macy’s chief merchandising officer, Nata Dvir “One of the things that has changed so much in my almost 20 years is how quickly trends are now making their way across the country. In the beginning, maybe the coasts, New York or L.A., got the trends first. Now everything’s instantaneous,” Dvir said. “The trend curve still exists, but it’s so much faster. It’s flatter and the reach and scale are so different. That is such a big, important part of how the merchants have to think about it too. It’s not like, ‘Oh, we saw it do a little bit of business this year, and next

Ray Nicholson on Acting, Overcoming Doubts, and Starring in ‘Borderline’ and ‘Novocaine’

It’s immediately clear upon meeting Ray Nicholson that he loves making movies. The 33-year-old is doing double duty, promoting films “Borderline” and “Novocaine,” both out last week, and doesn’t really stop smiling when discussing each. “Borderline” was a “one of one experience,” while shooting “Novocaine” was “one of the most fun I’ve ever had filming, for sure.” Despite initial resistance to acting, Nicholson is now following in the footsteps of his dad — that would be Jack Nicholson — and is quickly rising as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young actors.  “Borderline,” starring Samara Weaving and Eric Dane, comes from “Cocaine Bear” writer Jimmy Warden and tells the story of an obsessive, sociopathic fan who invades the home of the ’90s pop star who he is convinced he’s meant to marry. Warden and Nicholson met at a Sightglass Coffee to discuss the project, and Warden told Nicholson he was the one for the role.  “And that was so important for me because it was just the first time that I felt that a filmmaker really trusted me and really wanted me and really was behind me,” Nicholson says. “And from the beginning he was just like, ‘you know what you are doing?

Peter Som Serves Up Debut Cookbook ‘Family Style’

For Peter Som, cooking has been an ideal accompaniment for his career as a fashion designer.  “Coming from fashion where I was doing runway shows and collections four times a year and sort of cranking things out, this was a completely different process,” says Som, reflecting on the fast-paced industry where he established his career. “For me, cooking was always the counterbalance to [that]. Coming home, being able to go in the kitchen, cook something — have a beginning, a middle, an end, which hopefully was something delicious — that was what centered me during my fashion years. When I stopped my runway collections, cooking really became much more central to my life and what I love to do.” The cookbook speaks to the importance of family, “whether blood or chosen, and how so many of those memories are centered around sitting around a table and breaking bread together,” says Som. “Or in our case, eating rice. We always have rice for every meal. These are universal themes.”  Cacio E Pepe Rice from “Family Style” by Peter Som. While Som has been sharing recipes and food-based content online as part of his lifestyle brand for several years, he was inspired to put together his

Forever 21 Files Chapter 11, Seeks a Buyer to Keep U.S. Stores, Website in Operation

The other shoe dropped for Forever 21 on Sunday night when the teen retailer filed for bankruptcy for the second time and began the process of winding down its U.S. operations. The Chapter 11 filing is for F21 OpCo LLC, operator of the company’s U.S. stores and licensee of the Forever 21 brand. The retailer’s intellectual property and international operations are not impacted. Looking for a quick process, the company will hold liquidation sales at its stores while simultaneously conducting a court-supervised sale and marketing process for some or all of its assets. The company will also file a motion with the court seeking the authority to market F21 OpCo’s assets through an auction. If an interested buyer is found, the company said, it may pivot away from a full wind-down of the business. For the time being, the company’s stores and website in the U.S. will remain in operation. F21 OpCo has filed motions with the court seeking approval to use its cash to pay employee wages and benefits and other expenses to keep the business operating through the Chapter 11. Forever 21 was purchased out of bankruptcy for around $300 million in February 2020 by Authentic Brands Group, Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners,

Sulwhasoo Gave Its Most Iconic K-beauty Skin Care Line a Major Upgrade — And My Complexion Got a Glow Up.

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Flawless skin doesn’t happen overnight — but a major boost in radiance is absolutely on the table when you treat your complexion to ingredients that flood fine lines with moisture and support a healthy skin barrier. Luxury Korean skin care brand Sulwhasoo recently refreshed its Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Collection of face serums and moisturizers to do exactly that, offering quick-to-show results with long-term anti-aging benefits. Ginseng has a centuries-long history as an herbal remedy for all sorts of health concerns — some proven, others murky — that range from reducing fatigue to improving memory. Since 1954, Sulwhasoo has been researching how the ingredient’s strengths (namely a potent dose of antioxidants) translate to skin benefits, releasing its first ginseng-enriched formula, the ABC Cream, in 1966. Over the years, the Korean skin care brand refined ginseng’s role in skin care, harnessing not only its root but also its leaves and flowers to tap into the plant’s full power. This approach to the ingredient, notably the extraction of ginseng saponin in the 1970s, laid the foundation for what would become Sulwhasoo’s hallmark — combining

Tala Ashe Reflects on Broadway’s ‘English’ and Its Impact

“My nervous system is definitely in recovery mode,” says Tala Ashe, in the days immediately following the end of her Broadway show “English.” “I think with a sprinkle of some denial that it’s over, and some grief around that.” After a hit run off-Broadway, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play made its transfer to Broadway with a limited run that ended earlier this month. Ashe, who starred in the five-person show as Elham, is still getting used to the fact that her evenings are now free.   Leading up to the show’s final nights, Ashe says she and her fellow cast members each took turns being the emotional one for the night. “The thing that was most important, I would say to all of us, was that we just continued to honor the integrity of the show and that our feelings were our feelings, and that actually had very little to do with the show, and that we had to just tell the story that we had worked so hard with so much nuance to create and to build together,” Ashe says.  “English” is set in an Iranian classroom and tells the story of four adults trying to learn English for their proficiency exam. Amber Midthunder Readies for Her Thrilling Two-film Release Weekend

After several years of hearing that they should work together but never actually connecting, Amber Midthunder and Jack Quaid are no longer ships passing in the night: they’re costars in this weekend’s big box action movie “Novocaine.” “You work on something for so long and it feels almost private to you,” says Midthunder the day after the film’s L.A. premiere. It was the first time that the 27-year-old actress had watched the movie with a crowd, which included her castmates as well as friends and family. “This is such a fun movie to see with other people,” she says of the comedic action film, which has also been described as over-the-top gory. “It was really rewarding to hear the jokes landing and ‘eww,’ ‘ugh,’ — all those noises being made. Hearing everybody react and cover their faces at the gory parts — I was just sitting there laughing, and it made me so happy to see everyone reacting that way. I was delighted with joy at how disgusting these moments in our movie are.” Amber Midthunder Midthunder stars as the film’s love interest opposite Quaid, whose character Nathan Caine is unable to experience the sensation of physical pain. Jay Ellis Talks Netflix’s ‘Running Point,’ ‘Freaky Tales’ Role, and Closing the Chapter on Basketball

School drop-off was probably the last place Jay Ellis expected to land a role. The actor was walking out of his daughter’s classroom after getting her situated when he spotted Mindy Kaling coming down the hallway.  “She goes, ‘are you going to be my coach or what? Are you going to be my coach, Jay? Tell me now,’” Ellis recalls. “And I was like, ‘yeah, Mindy, I want to do it. I love you. You’re the funniest person in the world.’ That was my way in. I’ve never gotten a job at school drop-off before this.”  Netflix can thank a well-timed school run-in then for bringing Ellis to “Running Point,” the new Kaling-produced series on Netflix starring Kate Hudson as a Jeanie Buss-inspired owner of a Los Angeles professional basketball team. After premiering at the end of February, the series was just renewed for a second season. Gen Z’s Economic Impact Soars as Workforce Entry Boosts Spending Power to Over $1 Trillion

Early research on Generation Z found that while they make up about 25 percent of the U.S. population, their spending power was substantial. But new data shows that as these digital natives are entering the workforce in greater numbers, their spending power is off the charts. According to a new report from Gen Z Planet, the growing number of Gen Z in the workforce combined with wage increases and additional income streams, has pushed Gen Z’s income to be now slightly over $1.1 trillion. “This number is the sum of money Gen Zers between the ages of 16 to 26 generate from full-time or part-time employment (pretax), receive from their parents, or earn from side hustles,” the report’s authors said. “After deducting Federal and State tax obligations on earned income, Gen Z is left with an estimated $950 billion in disposable income — a figure any consumer brand’s product development or marketing teams would be foolish to ignore,” the report stated. Of the new collection, she was drawn to the bow detailing as well as some of the suiting. She was seated next to fellow Aussie Margaret Zhang, who she got to chat with, and met Phoebe Tonkin for the first time. “And then was fangirling some people from afar,” she says. “I wasn’t brave enough to go and say hello. But maybe next time.”  She did get to have a brief hello with Simone Ashley, who was the lead of “Bridgerton” season two and told Ha to text if she ever needs some advice. “It’s going so well,” Ha said
