In the original Baiju Bawra in 1952, Surendra had played Tansen and Bharat Bhushan had played Baiju. The Oscar-winning Hollywood film Amadeus is also based on the same story of two talented musicians, the mentor being outdistanced by the pupil. The challenge for Sanjay Bhansali is to create a semi-classical music score to rival Naushad’s monumental score in Baiju Bawra. The original had imperishable classic songs like ‘Tu Ganga Mauj Main Jamuna Ka Dhara’, ‘Oh Duniya Ke Rakhwale’, ‘Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj’ and ‘Bachpan Ki Mohabbat Ko’.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui won accolades for his portrayal of the late Shiva Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray in Sanjay Raut’s produced film titled Thackeray. During the announcement itself, it was revealed that the Abhijit Panse directorial will be two-part film. After the film’s release, rumours were rife that the second part was shelved. But, Nawazuddin has assured that the film is currently under works. Nawazuddin Siddiqui assures Thackeray sequel is in works Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is currently promoting Motichoor Chaknachoor, said that the initial idea was to make the film in two parts so that question to shelve the project does not arise at all. He said that the first part received a good response and the makers are currently working on the sequel script. He said that he had spoken to Sanjay Raut a few months ago and the producer assured that the second part is in works. While there is no confirmed timeline for the sequel, Nawazuddin Siddiqui shared that the makers were busy with the elections and he is tied up with his films. Since it would require him to get into the skin of the character again, it will take time before the sequel happens. On the work front, Nawazuddin is awaiting his next release Motichoor Chaknachoor, a wedding comedy that is slated for November 15th, 2019 release. He has just wrapped up Bole Chudiyan, helmed by Shamas Nawab Siddiqui. Besides these, he has eight films in his kitty among which The Serious Men, No Man’s Land, and Raat Akeli Hai are in the list to name a few.

David Olsen, who was most recently chief executive of luxury beauty retailer Cos Bar, is joining private equity firm Highlander Partners LP as a managing director, WWD has learned. David Olsen  There, Olsen will be in charge of sourcing investments in beauty and personal-care companies. He’ll also be involved with any beauty investments the firm makes. Before joining Highlander, Olsen spent three years as the ceo of Cos Bar, where he brought digital and e-commerce capabilities to a brick-and-mortar retail business. Before that, he launched Net-a-porter’s beauty business, where he brought in niche and luxury brands onto the platform. Prior to that, he founded and led DermTeam, a cosmeceutical business that was sold to Dermstore, which was eventually sold to Target. As luxury brands over a century old adapt to the tastes of newer generations, the fastest route to youth culture relevance has been through strategic partnerships with cult streetwear labels many decades their junior. This has been especially true in China, where streetwear-obsessed Millennials and Generation Z shoppers have become a significant focus for luxury labels. Out of all luxury collaborations with other brands, designers, celebrities or influencers, it was a streetwear label that was the most effective partner for generating social engagement in China, according to the new “Luxury China: Streetwear Insight Report” released by Gartner L2. Rimowa’s much-hyped Off-White partnership in fall 2018 was the luxury collaboration with the highest engagement on China’s Twitter-like Weibo during the report’s May 2018 to March 2019 study period. The collaboration with Virgil Abloh’s luxury streetwear label also served as the main source of social engagement in China for the 121-year-old luggage maker. Posts featuring the Off-White logo-emblazoned suitcases were responsible for 94 percent of Rimowa’s total Weibo engagement, and the collaboration also generated the highest daily Baidu Index score for the brand from January 2018 through March 2019. Sue Fox Named GM of The Estée Lauder Companies in U.K. and Ireland

LONDON — Estée Lauder veteran Sue Fox has been named senior vice president, general manager of The Estée Lauder companies in the U.K. and Ireland, WWD has learned. She will take up the job on Jan. 1 and report to Cedric Prouvé, group president, international. She will also join the company’s global Executive Leadership Team. An announcement is expected Friday. Fox’s appointment follows the abrupt exit of Philippe Warnery in September. Warnery had recently been promoted to president of the U.K. and Ireland, which is the company’s third-largest market. Fox has 25 years of experience within The Estée Lauder Cos., in several senior leadership roles and most recently in Japan, where as general manager she oversaw rapid growth in brick-and-mortar and online sales. She previously led the travel retail EMEA business, based in London, and was head of the company’s South Africa affiliate for 10 years. Deciem — the business behind cult skin-care hit The Ordinary — is closing stores and blacking out its web site for Black Friday 2019. Instead, the business will be offering an in-store and online 23 percent discount for the full month of November across all brands — The Ordinary, Niod and Hylamide included. Stores and the web site will operate normally on all days except Black Friday, according to the company. “Each Black Friday we were feeling increasingly more uncomfortable with being so heavily involved in a day centered around hyper-consumerism,” said Nicola Kilner, Deciem chief executive officer. “We are working hard to bring good skin care to as many people as possible, and while Black Friday certainly brings in new customers, encouraging rushed purchasing decisions is not a position we align with. But one thing is currently confirmed that fans will get to see him on the big screen in summer 2020. He will have a cameo in Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor starrer Brahmastra. This won’t be the first time Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan will share screen space. In 2016, SRK played Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ex-husband in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and had a cameo in the film when he meets Ranbir’s character. Alia and SRK have already worked in Dear Zindagi as a mentor and mentee. She even had a cameo in Zero. Brahmastra pair will head to Manali in November for a 15-day schedule. Tamburi Investment Partners Exits Furla

MILAN — TIP Tamburi Investment Partners is exiting Furla. The independent investment bank reached an agreement with Bloom, the company that controls the majority of Furla, to sell its shares in the accessories brand. The value of the transaction is set at 35 million euros. Following the operation, Giovanni Tamburi and Alessandra Gritti, TIP president and chief executive officer, respectively, will continue to sit on the board of Furla. In 2016, TIP invested 15 million euros to issue a convertible loan for a capital increase, which would have been automatically swapped into Furla shares at an initial public offering that was supposed to happen within 2018 but never took place. At that time, TIP also committed to underwrite an additional 15 million euros on the day of the listing at the same economic conditions offered to the market. A further quota of shares would have been allotted to TIP and sources estimated another 15 million to 30 million euros would have been paid then. A destination pop-up shop, the Tommy Jeans Platform is part of Hilfiger’s new retail strategy in North America, which focuses on offering a personalized approach to shopping that meets NextGen consumers where they are. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 1, Procell will collect and curate a limited selection of vintage Tommy Hilfiger pieces from the Nineties and early Aughts. The drop will be available at the Tommy Jeans Platform in Brooklyn and at the flagship Tommy Hilfiger store on Regent Street in London, with prices ranging from $50 to $1,500 per item. The store’s interior will be decorated with vintage pieces from the Tommy Hilfiger archive. With Natura Deal Pending, Avon Sales Dip

Avon Products Inc. posted continued declines for its most recent quarter. The company posted a 17 percent dip in sales, to $1.18 billion, from $1.4 billion in the prior-year period. Net income was down 6 percent year-over-year, to $106.6 million, from $113.8 million. The results come as Natura is in the process of taking over Avon, in a deal the companies agreed to in May. Jan Zijderveld, the chief executive officer of Avon said the company continues to execute its “Open Up” turnaround strategy. “The push and pull strategies that we have spoken about, along with a bigger, on trend stream of innovations, are working together to create significant value,” he said. “As expected, revenues declined as we continued to make sharper choices designed to drive a healthier, more sustainable and more profitable business.” Avon saw a 4 percent uptick in average representative sales, he said, and the company continues to focus on innovating in the beauty category. Recent launches include collaborations with The Face Shop for a cushion foundation and Chi for a shampoo, as well as Avon Anew Anti Pollution skin care. Estée Lauder Posts Double-Digit Sales, Earnings Jump

The Estée Lauder Cos. posted an 11 percent net sales gain and 19 percent earnings jump for the first quarter of fiscal 2020. Net sales increased to $3.9 billion in the quarter, from $3.52 billion in the prior-year period. Net earnings were $595 million, up from $500 million in the prior-year period. Diluted net earnings per common share increased 21 percent to $1.61. Lauder’s growth continues to be fueled by China, skin care and travel retail. “Our winning strategy based on multiple engines of growth helped us deliver an extraordinary performance, especially in light of the volatile global environment, reflecting the agility and resiliency we have created in our business model,” said Lauder president and chief executive officer Fabrizio Freda in a statement. He called out emerging markets and online channels as additional sources of growth, and noted that Lauder’s big brands are growing. “All four of our biggest brands, each with annual sales well over $1 billion, grew globally. Douglas Builds Beauty Marketplace With Partners Online

PARIS — With the aim of becoming the largest marketplace for beauty products in Europe, Douglas perfumery chain is launching an exclusive beauty partner program online. In the first phase of the digital platform, Douglas will add 10,000 new premium products from selected partners to the perfumer chain’s assortment of approximately 50,000 products it already sells in Germany. “Platform economy is the business model of the future,” said Tina Müller, Douglas Group chief executive officer, in a statement. “With the launch of the marketplace and its partner program, we are ringing in the decisive phase of our digital transformation. Douglas is becoming a platform, which allows us to successfully consolidate our position as the number-one beauty destination.” The products to be added to the platform at launch will come from natural cosmetics supplier Talea and fashion accessories supplier Brandfield. About 20 other exclusive partners, such as Parfumdreams, which Douglas acquired last year, are set to sell their products online through Douglas in Germany, as well. Zalando Continues to Gain in Q3, but the Future Looks Expensive

BERLIN — Zalando confirmed its guidance — revenue growth of around 20 percent — and boasted that the site had seen one billion visits in the last three months, as it reported strong third-quarter results on Thursday. That makes for around 14 million more visitors since June and is in line with Zalando’s previously stated ambition to become “the starting point for fashion in Europe.” Revenues grew 26.7 percent in the third quarter to 1.5 billion euros and gross merchandise volume rose 24.6 percent to 1.9 billion euros. Zalando started using the latter indicator — GMV for short — for the first time this year to show how much product it had shifted. As the Berlin-based company has transitioned to being more of a platform, developing logistics and marketing relationships with suppliers rather than making its own products, this metric makes better sense, the company has argued. David Schulte Reportedly Exits His Role as President of The Row

David Schulte has reportedly resigned his role as president of The Row. He has held the post for the past three years, having previously been chief executive officer at Oliver Peoples, the Los Angeles-based eyewear brand, since 2006. Officials at The Row were unreachable for comment, and Schulte didn’t return numerous phone calls seeking comment. It was also learned that Fabrizio Fabbro has joined The Row as chief operating officer. His previous role was senior vice president, creative operations at Burberry, where he worked for 17 years. The Row, the luxury sportswear company, was established in 2006 by Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, focusing on quality fabrics, attention to details and precise tailoring. The company opened its first store in Los Angeles in 2014 and its second flagship in New York in May 2016. The Row introduced a full-fledged men’s wear collection, that included suiting, denim and knits, in 2018. The Olsens were first named Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for The Row in 2012, and received the award again in 2015. L’Oréal Stock Rises 6.7% on Strong Results

PARIS — L’Oréal stock jumped on Wednesday morning, following the publication of strong third-quarter sales after the market close on Tuesday. The world’s largest beauty maker saw its share price climb 6.7 percent to 261.00 euros by 11:25 a.m. CET. As reported, the maker of Lancôme, Garnier and Maybelline products said its sales in the three months ended Sept. 30 came to 7.18 billion euros, up 11 percent in reported terms and 7.8 percent on a like-for-like basis. Financial analysts had a consensus forecast for a 6.2 percent sales gain in constant terms. “L’Oréal’s beauty is that growth in the global beauty market has shifted to categories and channels that are accretive to margins and where, in our view, L’Oréal has advantaged business models: e-commerce, skin care and travel retail,” Javier Escalante, an analyst at Evercore ISI, wrote in a research note. LONDON — Burberry Group has named Sam Fischer to the board as a non-executive director and member of the remuneration and nomination committees, with effect from Nov. 1. Fischer is currently president Greater China and Asia Pacific at Diageo plc, and is also a member of its global executive committee. Since joining Diageo in 2007, Fischer has held several senior roles, including managing director of Greater China and managing director for Southeast Asia. Prior to Diageo, he held a number of commercial and general management roles at Colgate-Palmolive. Gerry Murphy, Burberry’s chairman, said Fischer’s “experience and first-hand knowledge of leading iconic heritage premium brands will be a huge asset to Burberry as we grow our business in key Asian markets. John Galliano has hit his creative stride at Maison Margiela — and he’s staying put, WWD has learned. Renzo Rosso, president of Margiela parent OTB, confirmed that he has renewed Galliano’s contract as creative director of the Paris-based house. The length and terms of the new pact were not disclosed, but it is understood to span several years. Margiela trumpeted that revenues of the house have doubled since Galliano arrived in 2014, and that the designer propelled accessories to account for 60 percent of the business thanks to a series of hit handbags and sneakers in particular. “I believed John was the only person who could take this house five years ago, and I am even more convinced of this today,” Rosso said in a statement. “John’s undisputed talent is only matched by his understanding of today’s generations, their way of thinking, their struggles, their dreams. EssilorLuxottica Q3 Sales Rise 8.4% With Improvement in U.S.

PARIS — Eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica posted an 8.4 percent rise in third quarter revenue, helped by improved business in North America. Revenue over the quarter reached 4.31 billion euros, up 5.2 percent at constant exchange rates, lifted by brisk growth in the company’s largest activity, lenses and optical instruments, which rose 7 percent at constant rates. Analysts at RBC said the performance was in line with market expectations, but noted that Essilor’s sun and equipment businesses beat forecasts. Luca Solca of Bernstein said the third quarter performance was “another solid update” from the company, and noted “particularly convincing” growth in retail. The North American division posted 2.3 billion euros in revenue, up 8.9 percent, lifted by a currency boost and an acceleration in sales. Business at Luxottica’s wholesale and retail divisions improved, the company said, citing digital investments at Sunglass Hut as paying off. In Europe, revenue rose 6 percent at constant rates to 1.03 billion euros, with the company flagging a rebound in its sunglasses and readers activity, especially in the U.K. and Germany, along with double digit growth in e-commerce sales from Vision Direct. Disruption in Hong Kong weighed on Luxottica’s activities, with less business from consumers traveling from Mainland China, the company noted.

Harrods to Unveil Standalone Beauty Concept, H Beauty

LONDON – Harrods is on the move, with plans to test a new beauty standalone store concept called H Beauty. The first store will open in April, 2020 in the Lakeside, Essex shopping mall, about 20 miles from London, while the second will open in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, about 50 miles from the capital. The stores will offer premium beauty, cosmetics, skincare and fragrance products, and measure in excess of 20,000 square feet each. It is understood that Harrods will test the market with these stores before committing to further rollout plans in the U.K. The stores will also offer some beauty services, and have coffee-to-cocktail bars. There is only one Harrods flagship, in Knightsbridge, London, and it is understood the stores will in no way resemble Harrods, or its airport shop-in-shops. Even the branding will be new, with Harrods swapping its usual forest green for blush pink. Over the past months, Harrods has been pumping up its beauty offer in Knightsbridge, re-designing the halls for a new generation of shoppers and putting the emphasis on services, exclusives, J-Beauty and experiential shopping.
