Guo Pei Goes for Gold at Sotheby’s London ‘Midas Touch’ Sale

LONDON — Sotheby’s London is counting on Guo Pei’s expert eyes and hands, with plans to have the Chinese couturier select works for the second edition of “Gold: The Midas Touch” sale in London in October. She will also display, and sell, four of her couture creations as part of the project, WWD has learned. “The Midas Touch” sale in London focuses on the precious metal, which also figures big in Pei’s creations: Some of her gowns include 24-carat gold thread. The gold sale will encompass contemporary art, Russian works of art and Fabergé, design, furniture and decorative arts, Asian and Indian art, sculpture, Old Masters, medieval manuscripts, watches and jewelry. Sotheby’s said one of the sale’s highlights is a pair of multi-gem and gold horse heads by the French-American sculptor Herbert Haseltine, who was active during the first half of the 20th century. These artworks were created as part of a three-year project for Barbara Hutton, a former wife of Cary Grant and once one of the wealthiest women in the world.
