How Vera Wang Went From Ice Skater to the A-List Crowd’s Top Bridal Designer

Vera Wang never set out to become a groundbreaking bridal designer — her first dream in life was to be an Olympic figure skater. After failing to qualify for the U.S. team in 1968, Wang instead set her sights on the fashion industry. “For nearly four decades, my life has been defined — some would say consumed — by fashion,” Wang explained at a 2005 WWD summit. “But my career has been every bit as much about adversity as it has about passion, coupled with the necessary willingness to accept change.” Wang’s passion eventually landed her a gig at Vogue. At just 23 years old, she became one of the youngest editors in the magazine’s history. Seventeen years later, after being passed over for editor in chief, Wang left Vogue for her first job at a high-fashion label. But it wasn’t until she began searching for her own wedding dress that she realized bridal was her calling. Vera Wang’s first bridal salon in 1990. “If I could transform people’s perception of wedding gowns by making them more modern, artistic, inventive or stylish, then perhaps I could create a valuable, emotional franchise for the rest of their lives,” Wang said. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Antisemitism, Voting Rights and the Meaning of His Life

Arnold Schwarzenegger waded head on into the war between Israel and Hamas at Town & Country’s annual philanthropy summit on Thursday. The actor and former governor of California, who has emerged in recent years as a proselytizer of peace and positive thinking — in spite of years in the bruising confines of state government and Hollywood — denounced the rise of antisemitism in the weeks since Hamas terrorists stormed into southern Israel from Gaza and massacred 1,400 Israelis.  “We are in a very strange situation,” he said from the dais on the 44th floor of Hearst Tower in Manhattan. “We have a country that was attacked for no reason really. People burned alive, butchered, their heads cut off and all of this kind of stuff.” At the same time, he added, “Palestinians have the right to live and the right to have their own country, their own state.” Ultimately, said Schwarzenegger, the conflict, which has seen Israel’s defense forces bomb large swaths of Gaza City as they seek to root out Hamas militants, is rooted in the “tremendous failure of politicians.” “Life is life,” said the “Terminator” actor. “I think it’s unnecessary.” Schwarzenegger is among Town & Country’s annual philanthropy issue cover subjects, along with

Erin Lichy and Husband Launch Mezcal Brand, Talk RHONY Style Moments

“Real Housewives of New York” star Erin Lichy and her husband, Abe Lichy, have launched Mezcalum, an organic mezcal. The duo launched the new brand Thursday, and are advertising it as zero carb, zero sugar, artisanal and sustainably farmed. The spirit is curated from Espadin Agave and Cuishe, a variety from the valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico, and created in Doov Yaal, a family-owned and -operated distillery. It can be purchased online. Tulum vacations served as inspiration for the brand, the duo said. They have been married since 2012 and traveling to Tulum for 20 years, they said. Erin Lichy “The thing about Tulum that’s so special is it’s this massive jungle on this beautiful, untouched strip of beach,” Erin told WWD. “Everybody there is really conscious. You can party all night, but then you wake up and do yoga, or have a green juice. That’s kind of the life that we subscribe to, you can have a spirited night but still wake up the next day and do all the things you wanted to do.” “RHONY” stars Erin and Abe Lichy’s Mezcalum Mezcal ($49.99). The pair — who work as a real estate agent (Erin) and lawyer (Abe) — said they wanted to collaborate

The 15 Best Watches for Men at Every Price Point, According to Experts

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Contrary to what you’d gather from walking down any busy street, an Apple Watch isn’t the only watch for men to wear. And, much like the other Apple gadget sitting in your pocket, it can’t replace the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into the best watches for men. In the grand scheme, some men’s watches are a financial investment. But even then, as much as you should treat it with care, Hodinkee style editor Malaika Crawford suggests that “watches are almost always purely decorative or sentimental in value, and you should treat a watch the way you would any other accessory or piece of jewelry.” Although there are hundreds of special features (and price points) to sift through, there’s no reason to feel intimidated when shopping for your new timepiece. “We need to remember that there is no intellectual barrier to entry when purchasing watches,” says Crawford. “It’s okay to buy a watch because you think it looks nice, as opposed to being functional in any real capacity.” That said, a traditional watch can never go out of style. We’ve seen the
