‘Simplicity’ Defined Ellen Mirojnick’s Approach to ‘The Odyssey’ Costume Design

In “The Odyssey,” it takes Odysseus 10 years to make it home after the Trojan War. For costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, her journey with Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation was much shorter, but no less epic. It was less than two years ago — September 2024 — when Nolan and his producer-wife Emma Thomas called Mirojnick about the film, which follows their collaboration on “Oppenheimer.” “I hadn’t seen them in a bit,” says Mirojnick. “He put down the script, and it was ‘The Odyssey.’” A few hours later, Mirojnick had an understanding of Nolan’s vision for the film, which was just about to be greenlit for production. “Knowing what Chris has done over the course of his filmmaking career, it was clear that he was very intent on the idea of realism, and not fantasy,” Mirojnick says. “Once that word ‘realism’ comes down, it changes the game entirely,” she adds. “It sets the tone of the film in a way that is quite challenging, and quite exhilarating at the same time.” Unlike “Oppenheimer,” “The Odyssey” wasn’t meant to be a period piece; although there is an awareness of when the story is taking place, it doesn’t live within a specific historical period. “The process was from

Leather Sneakers Are This Summer’s Most Versatile Shoe. Here Are 7 Pairs to Prove It

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Leather sneakers are the most adaptable, well-rounded piece of footwear you can own right now, period. They read more pulled-together than canvas or synthetic counterparts but more laidback than dress shoes or loafers, which means you can wear the style while running errands, getting dinner, hitting the bars, or even taking meetings at the office. The best leather sneakers work just as well with shorts and jeans as they do with chinos or even slacks. Check under the tables at high-end restaurants across the world, and you’ll likely spot clean, crisp leather sneakers adorning many pairs of feet — making them the new business-casual gold standard. Let’s get one thing straight, though: Leather sneakers for men and women are more than their good looks. The material is the most durable you can use for shoes, so you’ll get better mileage out of your leather kicks than the aforementioned canvas or synthetic options. The top pairs of leather sneakers, if properly cared for, can carry you around for more than a decade. Given the footwear type’s ubiquity, there are a lot of leather sneakers

The Beaches Reflect on a Breakout Year, From Madison Square Garden to ‘Off Campus’

In true New York fashion, The Beaches were so busy running around the city on the day of their Madison Square Garden performance that the first time they took the stage was in front of a sold-out crowd. “It was such a hectic day. We weren’t able to get a soundcheck, so we had to raw dog the show,” recalls Jordan Miller, the band’s lead vocalist, in the days following the show. “But having the first moment that we were actually in the arena be right before we went on stage was so thrilling. I didn’t want the show to end. It felt like we belonged up there.” “Raw dogging” MSG might just be the band’s most rock ‘n’ roll move yet. The Toronto-based quartet — sisters Jordan Miller and Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel — are currently on tour opening for former One Directioner Louis Tomlinson. The tour finds the band in the midst of a rapid-fire year. In March, they were named Group of the Year at the Juno Awards for the third consecutive year, the first all-women band to do so. They released a deluxe edition of their 2025 album “No Hard Feelings,” which featured several new tracks,

These Collaborations Between High-End Hotels and Luxury Designers Are Worth Adding to Cart — No Plane Ticket Required

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Geotagging yourself in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is no longer cutting it. These days, refined travelers are turning to something a bit less tacky and a bit more tasteful when it comes to flaunting their globetrotting, Amex Platinum–having, passport stamp–collecting pursuits — by wearing that frequent-traveler status, quite literally, on their sleeves. We’re talking about the intimate, and relatively new, marriage between the world’s top hotels and luxury designers, which over the years has served a few key purposes: helping a particular resort’s top one percent of loyalists identify each other from Ibiza to Innsbruck and sending guests home with a more sophisticated souvenir than a fridge magnet, all while feeding into the universal obsession with collectibles (all the better if the items are marked by a distinctly “IYKYK” air). A Royal Welcome for the Inaugural Time100 Sports Gala

Olympians, royalty and a Quad God: the inaugural Time100 Sports Gala had it all, and then some. “In this room full of champions, I have to assume that I’ve been invited on stage to receive the participation medal,” said Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, during his dinner speech on Thursday evening. The royal was being honored by the publication for his support of the Invictus Games, which he founded in 2014 as a sporting event for wounded, sick, and injured servicemen and women. “And given the company, I’ll happily take it.” The room at Pier 60 was packed with the biggest names in sports, perhaps none bigger at the moment than Jalen Brunson — New York’s own newly minted royalty. The basketball player is still on a victory tour just one month after the Knicks took home the NBA championship. Brunson walked onstage to a standing ovation as Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” played. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to believe in your journey. Anne Hathaway’s ‘The Odyssey’ Maternity Dressing Was an Exercise in Embracing Her Inner Goddess

While the cast members of “The Odyssey” gave their respective press tour looks the Greek mythology method dressing treatment, Anne Hathaway took her looks a step further to accentuate her baby bump. If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. There are two types of people in this world: those who carry a portable fan everywhere they go in the summer and those who wish they had one. After weeks of relentless heatwaves, summer 2026 has officially become the season of personal cooling. Across the U.S., tens of millions of Americans have been placed under extreme heat alerts as temperatures climbed well above seasonal averages, while Western Europe recorded its hottest June on record. At Wimbledon, the heat became almost as much of a talking point as the tennis, with Kate Middleton, Prince George, and Queen Camilla all using handheld fans in the royal box. Battery-powered fans similarly became a familiar sighting at festivals and even fashion shows in the past few months, as editors and guests carried them between Paris Fashion Week venues while temperatures approached 100°F. How Zendaya’s ‘The Odyssey’ Press Tour Wardrobe Captured the Essence of Athena

“The Odyssey” press tour held its grand finale on Tuesday night with the film’s New York City premiere, featuring the cast in peak Grecian-inspired style mode. Zendaya, who plays Athena in the film and regularly favors method dressing, opted for ethereal elegance, capturing the essence of the Greek goddess in a white Matières Fécales gown that took the divine imagery running through her wardrobe to its most extravagant point. So, how did the actress’ longtime collaborator Law Roach pull off this (Greek) godly fashion feat? From sculptural white gowns to an archival Givenchy look rooted in Greek mythology, WWD breaks down Zendaya’s Athena-inspired wardrobe and the history of the mythological character. Who Is Athena? How Lupita Nyong’o’s ‘The Odyssey’ Press Tour Looks Embraced Helen of Troy’s Power

Each member of “The Odyssey” cast took the unofficial Grecian-inspired press tour dress code and gave it their own interpretation, with a few channeling their respective characters. Under the styling of Micaela Erlanger, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o’s promo wardrobe went full Helen of Troy, merging power and precision in equal measure. How did Erlanger and Nyong’o infuse those qualities into her red carpet and photo call attire? And what might the actress’ press tour wardrobe tell audiences about her interpretation of Helen of Troy before “The Odyssey” hits theaters on Friday? WWD dives into the history of the Greek mythology figure, translations of the complicated character and Nyong’o’s “Odyssey” era sartorial journey. Who Is Helen of Troy? A depiction of Helen of Troy by French artist Gustave Moreau. Getty Images for Sotheby's In Greek mythology, Helen of Troy was said to have hatched from an egg, the daughter of Leda and Zeus, who transformed into a swan while pursuing Leda. Interpretations of Helen’s character and qualities often emphasize her beauty, though British American classicist Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of “The Odyssey,” which filmmaker Christopher Nolan used as a reference for his adaptation, paints a portrait of a more complex figure caught in a political war. What to Wear to a Gala in 2026, Including Chic Outfits for Black-Tie and White-Tie Dress Codes

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. If you’re lucky, you’ll find your summer calendar stacked with black-tie or white-tie functions (more on the difference later). If you’re luckier, you’ll know exactly how to dress to impress for the galas, fundraisers, and fêtes in question… and we’re making it easier by giving you the 411 on what might be one of the trickiest dress codes to crack. If the mere mention of the word “gala” inspires “Bridgerton” flashbacks, you’re not wrong for this association. After all, women’s gala dress trends went hand in hand with European royal court fashion for a long time. In the 1600s and 1700s, corsets and wigs prevailed, while the 1800s and 1900s displayed a penchant for voluminous crinoline gowns and haute couture adornments like lace, ribbons, artificial flowers, and feathers. In the mid-1900s, gala culture hopped across the pond and landed squarely in America: kicking off a period of glamorous benefits (the Met Gala, originating in 1948, being chief among them in fashion circles) that continues to this day. Over the decades, the dominant sartorial directives for these occasions experienced significant shifts, and this year’s

Zendaya Merges Gladiator Style With Aughts Glamour in Vintage Alberta Ferretti

Zendaya continued her “The Odyssey” press tour with an Alberta Ferretti look that merged retro style with a Grecian aesthetic in New York City on Monday. Longtime collaborator and stylist Law Roach dressed Zendaya in a look from the Italian designer’s spring 2008 collection. The dress debuted during Milan Fashion Week in September 2007 and featured several design cues that evoked the Grecian look and feel of Zendaya’s “Odyssey” press tour while also incorporating several 2000s-era trends. The Handmade World of Netflix’s New ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Series

Like many Millennials, costume designer Mitchell Travers grew up with “Little House on the Prairie.” Watching repeat episodes of the original TV series from the ’70s and reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books for school, Travers developed a deep appreciation for the expansive representation of pioneer life that Wilder created on the page.  Now, Travers is part of that story through his work on a new screen adaptation courtesy of Netflix. After meeting with showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, Travers was quickly sold on the opportunity to put his own mark on the fabric of Wilder’s world.  “My initial conversations with Rebecca let me know how expansive she wanted this world to be, and that it wasn’t just a simple story in tall grass,” says Travers. “It was about a family who was very creative, and was able to make things with their hands.” Travers, whose varied costume projects include “In the Heights” and “Hustlers,” rooted his approach to the costumes in historical accuracy, while balancing the need for contemporary storytelling.  “I’m quite aware of the built-in audience that we have for ‘Little House,’” he says. “Oftentimes, these are people who enjoy making things, and so there’s going to be some understanding of sewing skills, and there’s

Kate Middleton went for classic black-and-white gingham in a summery dress by Temperley London for The Royal Charity Polo Cup 2026 Guards Polo Club event on Friday in Egham, England. Kate Middleton Getty Images The Princess of Wales, who was on hand to support Prince William, wore a Stirling gingham jacquard midi dress from the British brand. The sleeveless dress featured a square neckline with thick straps and a form-fitting bodice. Cinched at the waist for added silhouette definition, the dress transitioned to a flowing skirt with a midi hemline, ideal for the summertime season. The black and white gingham pattern gave the dress a classic touch. Kate Middleton and Prince William Getty Images Instead of continuing her black and white color palette, Middleton opted for neutrals to accessorize her attire. The Princess of Wales wore Camilla Elphick pointed-toe slingback pumps in a tan shade, along with jewelry pieces in gold and brown. Birds of a Feather: Jennifer Lopez, Emma Corrin and More Flock to Plumed Styles During Paris Couture Week

Celebrities at the recent Paris Couture Week revived feathery fashion — with designs by Schiaparelli, Michael Kors and more. Feathers and couture fashion have long flocked together. Since the early 1900s, plumassiers, or feather specialists, have worked with fashion houses to incorporate the material, both faux and real, into designs for couture and ready-to-wear collections. While the spring 2026 couture collections included several feathery designs, the fall 2026 Paris Couture Week was a showcase for feathered fashion from Jennifer Lopez to Emma Corrin and more. WWD breaks down those looks, among others, ahead. Jennifer Lopez Jennifer Lopez Swan Gallet Of the two feathery looks Jennifer Lopez sported during Paris Couture Week, her plumed wrap in a grayed-out tone — with a slight green tinge — was a true statement. The plumed wrap complemented the “Office Romance” star’s sheer dress, crafted with a plunging neckline and augmented by yellow, green and other pastel tones. The Summer of Muna

In the landscape of modern artists, who meet the pressure of maintaining attention spans and streaming numbers with constant content, Muna are trying to stay old school. “There are some people who are total maximalists who just put out a ton of music and in that, inevitably there will be genius and moments of transcendence and you inundate the market with your music,” Naomi McPherson says. ”That’s just what’s expected of contemporary artists because you need to keep your streaming numbers up so that you get a check in the mail every couple of months to be able to live your life. But yeah, we’re just a little old school, I guess, of wanting to make bodies of work that tell a story and capture a moment in time.” The band, composed of McPherson, Katie Gavin and Josette Maskin, released their fourth studio album, “Dancing on the Wall,” in May. One of the differences in the making of the new record was that the band built a proper studio space for the first time, rather than working out of their basements (or a friend’s basement, or “some nook in someone’s house”).  “It kind of was a natural progression of also what’s good for

Myra Molloy Reflects on Career, Representation and Embracing Joy

The craziest thing that’s happened in Myra Molloy’s life since her new movie was released is that nothing really has changed.  “I think people have this kind of assumption that your life just drastically changes after something comes out. But it’s just like, actually my life is exactly the same,” the 28-year-old says. “Other than the occasional person being like, ‘Oh, I loved you in the film or whatever.’ But it’s just like I still do the same things. I still eat my eggs in the morning and I walk to Pavilions and then I come home and I take a nap and then I do it all over again.” That said, there is the occasional conversation on that grocery run that turns into a heart-to-heart, and in those moments Molloy can feel that something has shifted. “It’s been quite amazing having real-life encounters with people on the street who have either cried to me or just expressed heartfelt thanks and are like, ‘Thank you. I feel so seen. Thank you for representing us,’” she says. “So that has been the most beautiful, rewarding thing, is just knowing that art does make a difference. That’s why we want to do this.” She stars in

With Muje, Chef Jungsik Yim Expands His Culinary Palette

Chef Jungsik Yim, whose TriBeCa restaurant Jungsik remains the only three-Michelin starred Korean restaurant in America, is broadening his purview. Yim has debuted Muje, a new restaurant that follows Jungsik’s playbook with a culinary palette that ventures beyond the “New Korean” fine-dining cuisine he helped establish in New York over a decade ago.  ”Jungsik is more expensive; it’s hard to get a table there. So I wanted to create a restaurant that’s more approachable,” says Yim. “So people can enjoy something as high quality as Jungsik, but with a more affordable cost.” Inside the Muje dining room. Alexander Stein Muje is located at 151 W 30th Street, just south of Herald Square and located between Chelsea and Koreatown. The restaurant takes the place of Sea, a casual Southeast Asian a la carte restaurant that Yim opened in 2024 and which closed its doors earlier this spring to make way for the new concept. “We realized, ‘Look, why don’t we lean into what we’re actually good at?'” says Yim. “I’m Korean, but our head chef here is Chinese, and we have a lot of other Asian chefs on the crew. So we figured, ‘Let’s broaden our scope and go with Asian cuisine.'” Muje in Korean means

Whenever blackheads surface seemingly overnight, it’s wise to approach them according to a simple golden rule: Don’t! Squeeze! Your skin! As tempting as it may be, the poking, prodding, and picking can do more harm than good, triggering irritation and harming your face. Instead, do your complexion one better with some of the best blackhead removal tools on the market that can safely (and effectively) clear the skin. These days, blackhead extractors come in all shapes, sizes, and types — from high-tech and pricey vacs to pore strips that manually pull out any debris, not to mention potent chemical exfoliants that utilize a mix of skin-friendly acids.  Before we get into the details of the top blackhead removers to shop online, it’s vital to understand what these pesky bumps are in the first place. “Blackheads are comedones (AKA pore blockages) that are open to the air,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Angelo Landriscina tells WWD. “The contents on the surface can become oxidized, leading to their dark color.
