New Dates Revealed for 2020 Summer Olympics
The 2020 Summer Olympics officially have a new date. The International Olympic Committee revealed on Monday that the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will now be held from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021. The Paralympic Games will follow on Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, 2021. “These new dates give the health authorities and all involved in the organization of the Games the maximum time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the IOC said in a statement. “The new dates, exactly one year after those originally planned for 2020, also have the added benefit that any disruption that the postponement will cause to the international sports calendar can be kept to a minimum, in the interests of the athletes and the International Summer Olympic Sports Federation.” On March 24 Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC president Thomas Bach confirmed the 2020 Summer Games would be postponed. A statement released by the International Olympic Committee read: “The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and that the Olympic flame could become the light at the end of the tunnel inFollow WWD on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook.
