Towa Bird on Album Release Jitters and the Summer of Pop Girls

If you haven’t heard, summer 2024 is, musically, for the girls, and Towa Bird officially throws her hat in the ring Friday. “I am really enjoying The Japanese House. She’s a great songwriter. I love Remi Wolf and her voice. I think she’s amazing. Just, like, the girls,” Bird says of what she’s been listening to as of late. “I love Chappell [Roan]. I love Charli [XCX]’s new album. I listened to a little bit of Normani’s album yesterday, and that’s so fun. Yeah. I love the girls.” Ask anyone else, and Bird’s name would likely be added to that list of recent listens. The 25-year-old has been on a steady climb the last few years, catapulted lately by her touring appearances with girlfriend Reneé Rapp. After two years in the making, Bird’s debut album “American Hero” drops Friday.  Bird will have returned back to Los Angeles from a week of press in Australia, just in time to celebrate the release properly: “I’m going to hopefully have a party and get aggressively drunk,” she says. The lead-up to the release has included a wave of emotions, but Bird admits to feeling a bit apprehensive.  “But I think once it actually comes out and I actually get to

Cody Williams and Jalen Williams Get Ready for the NBA Draft in Rhude

For his big night as a draftee into the NBA, Colorado Buffaloes star Cody Williams — and his brother, Oklahoma City player Jalen Williams — worked with Rhude on custom suits, marking the first time Rhude has dressed a player for the NBA draft. Both suits were made from English refined wool fabric and were finished with Italian craftsmanship. They are inspired by Rhude designer Rhuigi Villaseñor’s fall 2024 collection, called “Out of Range,” which “was inspired by the rich elegance of the English countryside, and a touch of modern fits,” the brand said. “This is the first time I’ve really put on a suit to this magnitude, a suit that’s this nice,” Cody said earlier in the day ahead of the draft, where he would go on to be selected by the Utah Jazz. “I’m really looking forward to being on the red carpet for the first time and really stepping out into the fashion world.” Cody Williams getting ready for the NBA Draft in Rhude. He described his final look as a summer take on the brand’s fall collection, resulting in a brown suit with cream silk lining and gold jewelry, including a gold brooch of the Rhude logo. “I gave them pictures of

NBA Draftees Stephon Castle, Matas Buzelis and More Talk Fashion on the Big Night

“I’ve seen so many crazy suits I didn’t want my suit to be remembered for the wrong reasons,” said Stephon Castle of his fashion thought process heading into his NBA draft night. “Simple but not too simple” was how Castle described his final look, a sentiment that applied to many of the looks Wednesday evening at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where round one of the 2024 NBA Draft was held (the second round will be held Thursday at Barclays, marking the first time they’ve been split across two days). Only a handful of the players on Wednesday said they worked with stylists on their look, while a couple worked directly with brands (Cody Williams and Rhude, Alex Sarr and Versace). For many others, family and friends came to the rescue.  “My mother picked this out,” said Matas Buzelis of his strong shoulder look. “I don’t like to do a lot [fashion wise], I like that it’s very simple.”  His interpretation of simple still managed to be high fashion: “YSL pinstripes, Tom Ford tie, YSL shoes,” he said. “And then I have my initials right here [pointing to his cuff monogram].”  Third overall pick Reed Sheppard enlisted the help of his girlfriend to select a pale

Behind the Scenes With ‘The Fire Inside’ Star Ryan Destiny Before the Dior Couture Show

Up-and-coming actress Ryan Destiny made her Dior Couture debut this week in Paris, taking in the latest collection from the brand.  Destiny, who is best known for her role in Lee Daniels’ Fox series “Star,” will be seen this Christmas in Amazon MGM’s biopic “The Fire Inside,” in which she portrays boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields. The film is written by Barry Jenkins and tells the story of Shields, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing and the first American boxer (male or female) ever to win gold in back-to-back Olympic Games. Destiny’s portrayal has been called one of the “most anticipated movie performances of 2024” by Variety.  With the fall bringing premieres and awards season events, it only makes sense to start things off fashion-wise at Paris Couture. Styled by Scot Louie for the Dior Couture show, the 29-year-old wore a “timeless Dior” look that had her feeling “sultry and feminine.” For glam, Destiny worked with Hos Hounkpatin on hair and Naima Bremer for makeup. “The hair was its own character. I was feeling her,” Destiny said of the beauty look. Glam is “always an adventure,” she added. “Love when we finally put all the elements

Avril Lavigne Does Couture: Behind the Scenes in Paris at the Tamara Ralph Show

Avril Lavigne was back in the front row this week, this time in Paris for the latest couture shows. Lavigne’s itinerary included Iris van Herpen and Tamara Ralph, the latter of which she documented for WWD. Lavigne was “still thinking about the [Iris van Herpen] show” while getting ready for Tamara Ralph. The musician accessorized her Tamara Ralph show look with a small glossy black clutch and a pair of black Christian Louboutin pumps. “These Christian Louboutins sure are different than what I have been wearing at the festivals,” she said.  Following the show, Lavigne gushed over the designs.  “I was so blown away by each piece on the runway,” she said of the collection. “Each was so dreamy and unique from the other. I want to wear each of her dresses.” After the show, she made her way backstage. “Meeting Tamara after [the show] was wonderful. I couldn’t stop talking about all the looks I loved,” Lavigne said.  Lavigne is one of many stars who has descended upon Paris for couture week. Dior’s front row drew Jennifer Lopez, Quinta Brunson, Marisa Abela and Doja Cat, while the Chanel couture show had Kerry Washington, Keira Knightley, Naomi Campbell, Michelle Williams and more.

EXCLUSIVE: The Manner Hotel, a New Luxury Concept From The Standard, to Open This Fall in SoHo

What if your most chic, connected friend had the doors open to their well-appointed apartment in SoHo for you to call home while staying in New York? If that friend welcomed you home at the end of the day with aperitivo and laid out local pastries and international newspapers for you each morning? And if, while in residence, you were surrounded by hand-done inlaid tiles, bespoke Italian furniture and dramatic murals?  Such is the concept behind The Manner, a new luxury hotel set to open at 58 Thompson Street this September from The Standard Hotel team (in other words: get your fashion week bookings in now).  The hotel is spearheaded by Amar Lalvani, the executive chairman of Standard International, and is intended to feel more like a private members club than a traditional hotel. It seeks to be the more grown-up sister to The Standard’s properties; those who used to frequent the Boom Boom Room a decade ago atop The Standard, High Line might find The Manner more their speed today. “I still love going to The Standard, but I also stay at other places. The Manner is elevated, I don’t like that word, but it’s more mature in a sense. It’s more

Bag Check: An Editor Reviews the Freja Mini Chrystie Bag Everyone Is Talking About

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. You don’t have to be on board with the stealth wealth movement to appreciate a gorgeously-constructed, goes-with-everything handbag — particularly one that has a four-figure look but rings in at under $300. After spotting Freja New York handbags tucked on the shoulders of tastemakers like Katie Holmes and Hailey Bieber, I decided to road test one of the brand’s buzziest styles: Freja’s Mini Chrystie Handbag, which is newly available in a soft sage color for summer. For those unfamiliar with the brand, here’s a quick primer: Freja New York launched in 2020 with 300 units of just one handbag, the Linnea Tote, which brand founder Jenny Lei designed to fill a void she saw when looking for a stylish, spacious laptop bag to carry to an interview. Slowly and steadily, Freja expanded its offering of chic, minimalist, and vegan leather accessories to include bucket bags and sculptural shoulder bags, eventually taking the brand from under-the-radar status to celebrity-approved. Just this spring, Freja handbags have been seen on tastemakers like Hailey Bieber, Katie Holmes, Alix Earle, and Matilda Djerf. Best of

Dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum Optimizes Aging With Lines Brand Launch

Clinical skin care has a new entrant. Dr. Marnie Nussbaum is the latest dermatologist to get into the skin care game with her brand, Lines, which debuts on the brand’s website in coming weeks with three products. They range in price from $45 to $95. The idea for Lines came to Nussbaum after years of homing her skills in aesthetic dermatology, when she noticed a growing appetite for skin care — and a growing confusion around products — in equal measure. “Once patients start aesthetic intervention, they become a different consumer. They want to know, now that they’ve invested in their skin, what to use to maintain it,” Nussbaum said. “We don’t want to use too many steps in a routine with single ingredients, because the third and fourth, for example, won’t penetrate the skin like the first and second.” All of the products, therefore, boast a heavy-hitting roster of active ingredients. The Wrinkle Pen can be used all over facial lines, and is formulated with peptides, collagen and bakuchiol; The Lip Serum features peptides and hyaluronic acid in several molecular weights, while the The Facial Serum combines vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, bakuchiol and peptides. “All three products have immediate and long-term results. Aaron Tveit Gets Personal Onstage at Café Carlyle

Originating a role on Broadway, a Tony Award, “Sweeney Todd.” This month, Aaron Tveit is checking another item off his New York performer bucket list: a residency at Café Carlyle.  His solo show at the iconic uptown venue has been several years in the making, with Tveit waiting for the right moment to make it a reality. “The Carlyle really has seemed like this beacon of a place to perform as a New Yorker,” says Tveit. “I didn’t want to simply throw a show together for The Carlyle. It felt like a place to do a new show.” Timing, as they say, is everything. The beloved Broadway tenor signed on to take over the lead role in “Sweeney Todd” this spring, and his Café Carlyle residency was announced — and quickly extended — to debut the month after the show’s closure.  “I felt like ‘Sweeney’ was a step in a new direction, and a little more serious and a little more adult than some of the other stuff that I had done,” Tveit says. “So it seemed like a really nice pairing to go from that right to this other thing that would be hopefully another new experience, and another way to

Hailey Bieber’s New Rhode Pocket Blush Is Actually an Amazing Tinted Lip Balm

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. When Hailey Bieber teases a new Rhode launch, the crowd goes wild. After two years in development, cameos in Bieber’s ‘Get Ready With Me’ TikTok posts, and hundreds of comments begging for more info about how she gets her signature glowy cheek look, the Rhode Pocket Blush is officially available to shop. The new Rhode blush is technically the second color cosmetic from the brand, but it’s the first time Bieber has ventured into the cheek category (one that she’s poised to have much success in, after coining blush-heavy trends like “strawberry makeup“). True to Rhode’s approach to face serums and moisturizers, the Pocket Blushes are created with ingredients that work with the skin barrier for a healthier, more resilient complexion in the long run. Peptides work to firm skin, while antioxidant-rich tamanu oil provides hydration and a silky texture. Rhode’s Pocket Blushes come in six shades that vary from earthy mauves to bright, punchy corals and true pinks. As Bieber has modeled in GRWM posts, these little cream blush sticks double as tinted lip balms, and great ones at

The actress, who was nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Tamara de Lempicka, was joined by her parents while getting ready for the big night. While Espinosa wore a Dolce & Gabbana gown, her parents each donned something equally festive: “Lempicka” show merch.  “They are the cutest. Always loving and supporting me,” Espinosa said.  Espinosa was styled by Jake Sokoloff and had her hair and makeup done by Kat Nejat. “There is always laughter when I’m getting ready with Kat,” she said. “We have been friends for years in the industry. She used to be an actress, singer, dancer on Broadway and has now pivoted into doing makeup and hair. We have been together for every event we have had this season and not only is she the best at what she does, but she is the most kind and fun to be around.” Espinosa and her parents took a “moment of prayer to give thanks and get centered” before she did some posed photos in her gown. “Playing Tamara, who was known for her nude portraits and for the way she painted skin,

It was the first Tony for star Juliana Canfield, who previously was best known for playing Kendall Roy’s assistant Jess in “Succession.” For the night, Canfield worked with stylist Bailey Moon, makeup artist Sam Lau and hairstylist Akihisa Yamaguchi, and wore a custom black Thom Browne gown.  “I love the exaggerated hips and that sumptuous silk faille,” Canfield shared of her look. The dress featured peonies and vines that were “hand-made, placed and applied,” she added. For jewelry, Canfield wore “the most beautiful sparkles” from Fred Leighton. “I don’t have my ears pierced so there’s always a fun search for the perfect clip-ons.”  It was a full-circle moment glam-wise, as Yamaguchi and Lau also did Canfield’s hair and makeup for the opening night of “Stereophonic” “and have been with me for many

Getting Ready for the Tony Awards With ‘Stereophonic’ Actor Tom Pecinka in Armani

For “Stereophonic” actor Tom Pecinka, the whole Broadway season of the show has felt like a whirlwind.  “I keep saying, they put us in a rocket ship and shot us off,” he says. “So I hope to either land on the moon or come back down to Earth.” The actor was nominated for a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play, alongside fellow “Stereophonic” castmates Eli Gelb and Will Brill. (Brill would go on to win the award Sunday night.) The show, which was up for a whopping 13 awards, would be crowned Best Play.  Pecinka was in his bathroom when the nominations were announced, somewhat hiding out.  “I couldn’t bear to watch the livestream. I was constantly refreshing The New York Times, but I have really bad service in my bathroom, so it wasn’t really working, and I think I did that as a protective measure,” he says. “But my girlfriend was in bed and she was secretly watching with the sound off on her phone, and she thought I was in the lead actor category, so when she saw that my name wasn’t there, she literally went back to bed. At age 17, Constance Jablonski moved from the northern French countryside to New York City to pursue her modeling career. In 2021, the model also became an entrepreneur with the launch of French Bloom (founded by Jablonski and close friend Maggie Frerejean-Taittinger), a sparkling nonalcoholic alternative to bubbly Champagne. The dog days of summer are often the busiest time of the year, as may find yourself flitting from the office to rooftop dinners, scrambling a suitcase together for a weekend getaway, or moving through a stacked roster of summer weddings. And, as new summer fashion trends continue to roll in, there’s far less time to shop, so it can feel overwhelming to cover all your bases. Where to start? Determine the occasions you’re dressing for and then dive in to the fresh aesthetic you’re craving. Need an outfit that can take you from a workout class to brunch in style? At the Pebble Bar after party hosted by Kelli O’Hara and Arian Moayed, Paulson, who won for her role in “Appropriate,” posed with her Tony the entire night, biting it and holding it up to flashing cameras. She also laid across her costar Corey Stoll for several pics. Nearby, Elle Fanning, dressed in a black pantsuit and stilettos, was perched on a piano bench, sipping a martini and chatting with friends, while “An Enemy of the People” star Victoria Pedretti seemed to be avoiding cameras. While guests had four floors to explore at the Pebble Bar nearly every attendee landed on the top floor, where the music was loud, the drinks were flowing and the crowd was packed in. O’Hara, sporting a high ponytail and “Barbie” pink gown, mingled with guests including her “Days of Wine and Roses” costar Brian d’Arcy James. Throughout the evening, she also shared intimate moments with Tony winners Billy Porter, who went full glam with a glittery smokey eye, sparkly lip and diamond hair accessory, and “Purlie Victorious” star Leslie Odom Jr., who wore an all-white fit and ’70s-esque sunglasses. From Jay-Z’s Surprise Performance to Daniel Radcliffe’s Tears, a Look Inside the 2024 Tony Awards

Sunday night, Broadway’s elite — from Daniel Radcliffe to Alicia Keys to host Ariana DeBose — gathered at the Lincoln Center in New York City for the 77th annual Tony Awards. For many, the great white way brings to mind images of New York City, so it was fitting that Keys, dressed in a matching Gucci set, took to the stage with the “Hell’s Kitchen” cast to sing her iconic song “Empire State of Mind” during the show. But perhaps as a surprise to many in the audience and at home, Jay-Z joined her…though not on the stage but on a staircase in the lobby of the Lincoln Center.  The glitz didn’t stop there. Theater icons, like Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Ben Platt and Cynthia Erivo, took to the stage to present. Famed producers Hillary Clinton, who received a standing ovation, and Angelina Jolie introduced the performances of their respective musicals “Suffs” and “The Outsiders,” which took home the Tony for best musical. Attendees ran the gamut, including Brooke Shields, newly appointed to president of the Actors’ Equity Association, Nick Jonas, Jennifer Hudson and nominee Rachel McAdams, who brought her mom along. Winners included Sarah Paulson, Jeremy Strong and Radcliffe, who took

MILAN — The world’s most discerning art collectors will descend, once again, on Capri’s Marina Piccola and Marina Grande during the first week of July for the 14th edition of the Nomad Design Fair. The invite-only itinerant art and design showcase takes over unexpected, glamorous locations and brings emerging and established galleries, as well as unique projects, together under one roof — think creations from New York’s Friedman Benda, David Gill Gallery from London, Nilufar Gallery from Milan, and Etage Projects from Copenhagen. “It’s not a little group,” says Nomad cofounder Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte. “It is a massive yacht show basically happening in Marina Piccola and Marina Grande. You have like 100 of them. It’s crazy. From the U.S., from Qatar, all around the world. They’re all there that week.” From July 4 to 7, Nomad will unfold in Dolce Vita-style at the oldest historical building on the island of Capri, Carthusian Certosa di San Giacomo. Perched on a verdant cliff, it was built in 1371 by Count Giacomo Arcucci, secretary to Queen Giovanna I, overlooking the azure blue of the Mediterranean and central square La Piazzetta. Seven-time Olympic Gold Medalist Caeleb Dressel on Mental Health, Doping in Sports and the Paris Games

It was only 100 meters. It took less than 50 seconds, 47.02 to be exact. But it changed everything. When Caeleb Dressel touched the wall six-tenths of a second ahead of Kyle Chalmers, the decorated Australian swimmer, in the 100-meter freestyle at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, he solidified his place at the apex of the sport. “His legacy is set as one of the greatest, if not the greatest American sprinter in history,” says Rowdy Gaines, the veteran NBC Sports analyst who won his own gold medal in the event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. “And that’s saying a lot.” In America, which has dominated swimming on the world stage for generations, the names that transcend the sport, with some notable exceptions (Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky), have been sprinters who won the 100 free. It requires speed but also strength and superhuman endurance. The start is critical, and so is the turn at the wall. If a swimmer is too long in the turn, it is virtually impossible to make up critical seconds in the second leg of the course. From Rare Beauty’s Plush, Pink Digs to The Outset’s Modern-rustic Headquarters: Inside 4 of Beauty’s Most Beautiful Offices

From Rare Beauty’s plush, pink headquarters to Glossier’s SoHo, New York outpost — here, a glimpse into four of beauty’s most beautiful offices. Violette_FR Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York 01 courtesy courtesy courtesy A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a single shelf situated in Violette Serrat’s office relays entire histories. That’s a somewhat literal assertion — the makeup artist-turned founder of her eponymous beauty line has a penchant for all things vintage, and it shows — but it’s also true in a figurative sense; the trinkets, mood boards and even the Parisian-style moldings that furnish the office serve a very specific purpose — to ineffably depict the artistic and cultural heritage of Violette_FR. “I don’t think I’m always the best communicator, but this brand is so clear for me in my head,” says Serrat. “Having my world around me so that I can point things out, so things are in my face constantly in a concrete way — it’s like instant access to my creativity.” Between the seemingly countless jars of dry powder pigments sourced over the years from various Japanese flea markets (“when I started doing makeup I would carry around my pigments in kits because makeup products were too expensive,” Serrat says),

25 Top Fashion and Beauty Products to Master Summer’s Unexpected Color Trends

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. From summer whites to nautical stripes, dressing for the warm weather season can be predictable, even a bore. Not this summer. It’s time to think outside your usual crayon box of wardrobe colors for colorblocking combinations that pair sensual, sophisticated hues with invigorating pops of color. Think rich, earthy autumnal shades put together with light, refreshing pastel tints, all completed by finishing touches of bold brights. Color us crazy, but this unexpected color palette — one that painted many of the fashions and beauty looks of the spring 2024 designer collections — makes summer dressing a breeze with an air of refined ease. This rarity of a color story embraced by several luxury labels can be seen as a natural progression to feed the consumer’s desire for something new and wearable while not straying too far from fashion’s minimalist aesthetic of the moment. This palette cleanser of sorts allows a designer to showcase strong tailoring and explore silhouettes with proportion play. For masters à la mode like Miuccia Prada and Dries Van Noten, this is a sweet spot to teeter between

Serena Williams Surprises at MAC Cosmetics’ Billion Dollar Ball

MAC Cosmetics closed out Thursday right where it began — literally. The makeup giant drew a star- and executive-studded crowd for its Billion Dollar Ball Wednesday night, which took place a mere stone’s throw away from the New York Stock Exchange where executives and celebrity spokespeople started the day by ringing the opening bell. Kim Petras and Danna Paola, current MAC Viva Glam ambassadors, were among the famed attendees, who quickly shuffled to the basement of the old J.P. Morgan bank building, where bumping bass could be heard from the streets. “I’m expecting a lot of fabulous people, and a lot of fabulous glam,” said model Alex Consani, the event’s cohost, nodding to the out-there makeup looks, impossibly high heels and headpieces attendees were sporting. “It will be the coolest group of people.” Other attendees included Normani, past brand collaborator Teyana Taylor and Lil’ Kim. As for Taylor’s favorite MAC product? “My very own line,” she said. “All the creative freedom, all of the teamwork, to be able to get to be represented — I was literally able to name everything, and I had so many products to test and play with.” The party celebrated the past and future in equal measure. Ewan Mitchell Suits Up for ‘House of the Dragon’

Earlier this month, “House of the Dragon” star Ewan Mitchell found himself in New Jersey, ringside for a UFC fight. “I heard that it was Dustin Poirier’s last fight — I was like, I need to see him,” says the British actor, going on to describe the experience of being close enough to hear the punches thrown and the takedowns reverberate. Mitchell, who started boxing himself two years ago, credits HBO for helping to hook him up with seats: a perk of being part of the network’s marquee shows. The actor was in town with his castmates ahead of the New York premiere of the second season of “House of the Dragon.”  The actor stars in the “Game of Thrones”-adjacent series as Prince Aemond Targaryen, a tragic semi-villain. The actor has emerged as a fan favorite for his portrayal of the one-eyed prince, who was neglected and bullied as a child but emerges into adulthood with a firm sense of power — and, after being denied his own dragon egg, the most powerful dragon around. “You’ve got this giant, badass dragon named Vhagar, and she’s so enormous that she can’t fit within the confines of any castle wall. Glossier Just Dropped the Perfect Nude Lip Liners With the Help of This Makeup Artist Hack

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. The pursuit for a holy grail neutral lip liner, much like nude lipsticks, is inherently personal. Not only must it seamlessly match the color of your natural lips — a non-negotiable for those who like to draw outside the lines to enhance their pout — it should also flatter your overall skin tone and act as a chameleon base for shiny lip gloss and matte lipsticks.
