Safilo Partners with Aquafil on Eco-Friendly Eyewear
Italian eyewear manufacturer Safilo is upping its sustainable efforts. The company said Friday it is introducing the patented Econyl regenerated nylon into its collections through a deal with Italian synthetic fibers and polymer firm Aquafil. This marks the first time the eco-friendly material is being employed in the eyewear industry. “This sustainable material will allow us to make our contribution and create products without using new resources. Our intention is to expand the use of Econyl as much as possible in order to decrease our carbon footprint,” commented Angelo Trocchia, chief executive officer of Safilo Group. Econyl fiber is obtained through the regeneration and purification of plastic waste, including discarded fishing nets, carpets, and fabric scraps. Aquafil’s ceo Giulio Bonazzi said, “it is a completely new sector in which our Econyl material is now used, and it is this pioneering spirit that most unites us with a company like Safilo, which, like us, has innovation in its DNA.” Tommy Jeans is the first brand within Safilo’s portfolio of licensed brands to embrace the green material but the eyewear manufacturer said it plans to extend its use to other brands, which include Carrera and Polaroid, as well as Fendi, Jimmy Choo, Max Mara and Marc Jacobs.Follow WWD on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook.
