I really didn’t, and these were kind of risky choices, these parts.” The Oscar winner is up for Outstanding Lead Actress and Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for Showtime’s miniseries prison drama “Escape At Dannemora” and Hulu’s true crime series “The Act,” respectively. Both roles are based on real-life characters. “I think for a really long time I’ve been wanting to do character work,” she continued inside Los Angeles’ AllBright, the members-only club on Melrose Place that was founded by and for women in London. “Even when I was younger, I really wanted to do character work. People just didn’t want to see a girl doing character work so much, especially if you looked a certain way. If they thought you looked funny, quote unquote, and didn’t fit into their mold, then you could go and do character work. But if you were a little too close to being pretty, then you would just have to be the pretty girl.” Leading up to the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, Arquette had just finished addressing a crowd of women as partFollow WWD on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook.
